LAGOS STATE ENFORCES THE USE OF PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES

Tell your friends

Lagosians forced to use the pedestrian bridge

Residents of Lagos state are being forced to use the pedestrian bridge at the Ojota axis and in other parts of the state.

In 2015, the House of Representatives tried to amend the Federal Road Safety Act.

This amendment would enforce the use of pedestrian bridges.

If passed, offenders would get a fine of N20,000.
Then, the Director of Public Enlightenment in Lagos state, Mr Oluwatoyin Awosika, advised residents to use pedestrian bridges.

"We have done our own survey in the ministry of information and found out that to climb the bridge, the time is even lesser. If you spend a minute to climb the bridge, you would not spend a minute to cross the highway and then it is safer to take it," he said.
Now, the use of pedestrian bridges is being enforced in Lagos state.

This began on Monday (April 11, 2016), when hundreds of individuals were forced to use the pedestrian bridge to cross to the other side of the road.

Lagosians were forced into a line as they crossed the bridge.

According to Anambra State’s Sector Commander, Mr Sunday Ajayi, these bridges ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he urged all residents, including visitors to use the pedestrian bridges.

"We do know that during celebrations, people are in high spirit and may default in obeying traffic rules while driving.

So, we are appealing to Anambra residents to ensure that they use the pedestrian bridges in the state to avoid crashes this period,’’ he said.

ADVANTAGES OF A BRT SYSTEM

It will reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and meet the mobility needs, particularly of the less privileged and poor masses of the Lagos metropolis.

It is a roadway-based system that looks and behaves like a subway, offering high capacity rapid transit services but on dedicated lanes or city streets.

Guaranty a fast and reliable travel time – When operating in exclusive running ways or dedicated lanes, BRT systems can run at faster speeds than conventional buses in regular traffic and even as fast as light rail.

By offering frequent service and avoiding traffic-related delays, BRT systems can provide riders with a more reliable travel time.
