It's because Malaria and Malawi have 4 things in common: MALA . That's why they're launching the vaccine in that country, according to WHO

Several. This has been a source of controversies and featured in documentaries. Lots or disabled children, stillbirth and all that caused by drugs with unknown side effects.

Same thing has happened in the west too and their governments have successfully made and implemented laws that aims to prevent it ever happening again. If you are right, Who's responsibility is it to make sure it does not happen anywhere in Africa?

I think you're not been fair if you're blaming pharmaceutical industries or any European agency that cared enough to sponsor research with billions of dollar for a disease that affects mostly the African continent, while her leaders prefer to loot resources that could have gone a long way. Bill gates doesn't need to sponsor research on malaria vaccine, because malaria is not a concern in the U.S and he has other avenue to make his money should you decide to bring the issue of ulterior motives, which is strictly business

A case in point was the ebola epidemic, the US denied it had no treatment for ebola despite pleas from the Nigerian and Liberian govt, however when the 2 american doctors were infected miraculously they were cured.

Before Bill gates got involved with malaria, Fovt of african countries had spent millions in malaria medicine and research. All that was being created were drugs, not a vaccine.

A drug sustains the market, vaccines dont.

Malaria exists in every inhabited part of the earth, why is this vaccine being used here first?

I'm angry we Africans allow these white supremacists use our kids as guinea pigs for carrying out their research.

So all these years they could make a vaccine?

Pharmaceutical companies allowed millions including children to die in africa, all because they were looking to milk the already improverished african nations of its scarce and little resources.

This is a case of making money off other people’s misfortune, even when that misfortune includes their lives.

Mans inhumanity to man. Disgusting!

it is not a replacement to the existing package of proven malaria preventive, diagnostic and treatment interventions that will all know. Like bed nets and indoor spraying with insecticides. This existing prevention will still be used alongside

Wow!

I pray it succeeds.

Another thing on my mind is why must they test it in Africa?

So African children are now the lab rats to do drug trials in humans?

God please help Africa to become the humans you have made them.

We know that malaria is endemic in Africa, Asia, South and Central America, Dominican Republic etc. In fact more than 100 countries are affected, but the burden of the disease is more on the African Continent. So, it sounds logical that the clinical trials will be conducted in Africa.
We should look at issues dispassionately. Remember, they also conduct clinical trials in the developed countries after necessary approval from regulatory agencies.

In the case of Ebola, the drug you referred to was an experimental one and hence can't be distributed to combat an emerging epidemic. Many factors and variables were involved, particularly the strain and serotype of the dreaded virus. Let's assume you're right, how does that justify the fact that African leaders always depend on foreign force to solve out problem for us,what if they decide not to show any interest, we'll all be left to die? The last Meningitis outbreak in Nigeria came to mind. when this outbreak started killing people, spreading sporadically to states,FG had no emergency plan to curtail such an outbreak in form of prophylaxis or whatsoever, they ran to WHO and Bill gate foundation for the availability of the vaccine that was in stock. Unfortunately, the vaccine can only combat type B and not the prevailing type C strain.
Africa should learn to solve her problem rather than depending on those that are not directly affected by it. We should learn to appreciate their humane gesture rather than condemning them

You raised a good point. But that will only be possible when african begin to groom his own scientist and be able to come up with their own vaccine . So for now the power belongs to the hunter.

However, malaria is an epidemic in africa, for instance Ghana is considered to be at high risk of malaria as it accounts for about four per cent of the global figure and seven per cent of the burden in West Africa.

I think Nigeria health sector should have lobby for it too since Nigeria has the highest burden rate in west africa and one of the highest in the world.

The drug had been tested by both national and international organization and it is consider safe for human use.

Generally, vaccine confer lifelong immunity and protection (10yrs mostly).
Relatively to this newly discovered Malaria vaccine,it means you might not have to treat Malaria for the next 10yrs depending on the lifespan of the vaccine.

WHO considered so many factor when making selection for country to be included in the tier programs, one of the factor considered was what you've listed, another thing considered is measure/palliative taken so far in combating the trend. While Malaria may be considered endemic in Nigeria, adequate measure taken so far has drastically reduced it to a considerable level

Having a private research center will not be a bad idea. Local investors can look at this area too instead of the usual oil and gas or cement.. West african or african can even form a scientist team where the idea will be transfer and put into use. Private investor can then sponsor it and make it economic useful .

American and Germany are doing great in this area. China too is coming strong.

Though Nigeria and Ghana may have experienced significant gains in the control of malaria with existing interventions, malaria still remained a burden and a public health problem in Nigeria and Ghana with high mortality and morbidity rates.

So considering this fact, Nigeria should have lobby for it. Eventually, the success in malawi will mean Nigeria will roll it out soon. Whereby the ealier participation may have birth some good fruit.

You are forgetting that over the years we have had cases of indigenous researchers having their works and research dismissed with the excuse of improper testing or inconclusive research or administration.

Doctors like Dr Abalaka who has sternly insisted that he has a vaccine for the prevention of HIV, has he been given audience or has his research been looked into? If such was coming from a so called renowned oyinbo researcher from pfizer it will see the light of day.

Go and look up series of health fraud perpetrated by pfizer around the world, especially here in africa. Isnt that inhumanity?
