2011: Why Saraki may drop presidential bid
Monday, 20 September 2010 01:00 Max Amuchie

The meeting between Kwara State governor, Bukola Saraki, and a governor in the North East might have made the Kwara State governor to change his mind about contesting the 2011 presidential election.

BusinessDay investigations revealed that when Saraki spoke with the governor who is a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on phone about his bid, the governor requested to meet Saraki in Saraki’s house in Abuja.

BusinessDay learnt that both men eventually met for two hours, during which time the North East governor, a very close friend of Saraki and also a vociferous supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2011 bid, advised the Kwara State governor to drop the idea because most of the governors have already made up their minds and in fact have made commitments on who to support in the presidential race.

Without the support of the governors, Saraki has no strong political structure outside Kwara State.
A political analyst told BusinessDay that the Kwara State governor would not make much impact if he declares to run under such a situation. BusinessDay investigation suggests that Saraki must have changed his mind after the meeting with the North East governor.

Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who was speculated to be the prospective running mate under a Saraki presidency, was reported to have denied that there was any such plan, saying that the Kwara State governor had not told him (Amaechi) that he was going to run for presidency Saraki was touted as a kind of ‘unity choice’, a compromise candidate that could be more acceptable to Nigerians than former military president, Ibrahim Babangida and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who are the two contenders for PDP ticket from the North.

That really needs to be knocked into Saraki's skull.

This typically exemplifies what is our main problem in that country of ours. The north has the mentality that they were born to rule the country and you see the manifestation of that outlook in their postures. They insist on a northern candidate for the nxt election, however they have no one credible to sell to the rest of us apart from some old decrepit militicians and rogue politicians with unenviable credentials. When that doesn’t seem to be meeting the people’s expectations, they start throwing any northerner’s name in the air hoping that one will stick. Imagine Saraki being touted as potential presidential candidate. Only in the Caliphate’s Nigeria.

This same approach gave us late yar adua. Was it not the same Ribadu who confessed that after the truncation of OBJ’s 3rd term bid, he and his fellow co-travellers were given the task of finding the nxt northerner to occupy the exalted post. After, searching high and low, they came up with two names and one of them was the olokurun, a.k.a one-foot-in-the-grave Yar dua! This was a man who never recorded any meaningful achievement in all his 8yrs as governor of Katsina state apart from instituting sharia on his pauperized people. This is a guy who spent most of his tenure as governor junketing from one foreign hospital bed to another. At one time, he was even reputed to have been in a foreign hospital bed convalescing, for close to 6months! And the northern elite had the temerity to turn round and blame Obj for foisting the sickler on the nation.

Do they mean, they were not aware of Yar adua’s dodgy health status all this while? I remembered, even the man’s mother at the time made an odd statement which now in hindsight makes more sense to me. She knew her son cannot withstand the rigors of what Obj and the northern elite were going to confer on him. This was the same guy who could not even run a local family business in Nigeria!

And that ‘s saying something and now they are proposing another political failure to move into aso rock. Its all the same old song. "We must have a northerner in Aso rock irrespective of whether he’s capable of moving the nation forward or not. We are the kingmakers so our wish must prevail".

As for my igbo brothers when the time comes for them to choose a representative among them to move to aso rock, you can bet your bottom dollar that this same “owners of Nigeria” are gonna be the kingmakers choosing the igboman (like they chosed Obj for the yorubas ) who will put their (northerners') interest above all others, in the country. This is why I hope they all vote in concert for ibb and he wins the nxt election. Though, I must add that I wouldn’t trust anything that emanates from that guy's mouth, anyway. Not to mention that the level of hardship that ibb would have visited on the nation in 4yrs, that’s if he does spend only one term, I doubt if any igboman would want to pick up the pieces.

Let’s break up this monstrosity ojare and who ever wish to have the ilk of Ibb, Buhari, Saraki ati bebelo, etc etc lording it over them, are welcome to them.

what sout people like you dont understand is that the north pdp can given the presidetial ticket to an igbo but the north will present one candidate beating the igbo or delta in a free election.

the biggest mistake hausa made was to put obasanjo there. They wanted to set a trap for delta or an igbo man. They didnt expect the sw people to support Jonathan and it was a shocker for Obasanjo to throw his support behind Jonathan.

The north never planned on voting for an igbo or delta even if they recieved pdp ticket, most northerner were going to vote for ANPP. As you can see after the sw and Obsanjo supported Jonathtan the rest of the country followed even the govs who did not want Jonathan as president.

It is also said IBB knew yaradua was going to die and IBB was going to take over from then, He was surprised when Obasajo supported Jonathan.

amingafar,

How about breaking up this dumb contraption as this unholy union ain't working? we 're still at each other's throat, 50yrs after independence. You northerners have ruled us for the best part of our independent life and what have we all got to show for it? Zilch.

If we can't progress in unison maybe its time we go our seperate ways.
