Governors’ Spouses’ Summit ends in Abuja with a call for first ladies to play more supportive roles

Ondo State Governor’s wife, Her Excellency, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu joined her counterparts from the thirty six states of Nigeria to a one day summit organized by the Nigeria Governors’ forum for Governors’ Spouses’, at the Banquet hall, Aso Villa, in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Governors’ spouses’ summit which is the initiative of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, seeks to address national issues as it concerns, Security, infrastructure, environment, agriculture, education, health, economic development, governance, public financial management, policy & strategy, Anti corruption, knowledge management.

Addressing the summit, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Mrs Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, expressed happiness for being part of the summit.
Mrs Buhari, also expressed delight that all the first ladies have been working successfully for the betterment of the cause of women, children, young people and the less privileged.


She pointed out that every wife of governor plays a complimentary role to support the efforts of the governor, especially on the issues of women, youth and children.
While commending the Nigeria Governors’ forum for organizing the summit, Mrs Buhari called on first ladies to play more supportive roles in governance.

Contributing during the plenary session on the topic; Setting priorities and identifying pet projects, Ondo state First Lady who was one of the discussants, described the summit as an amazing platform for mentoring and networking.

She however submitted that life experiences and professional experiences help in the events of choosing priorities and making discission as it concerns pet projects.

Mrs Akeredolu advised her fellow first ladies to be committed to leaving lasting legacies by building strategic alliances and taking advantage of policy and legal frameworks.

Participants were drilled on the role of a 21st century First Lady, Accountability and human development, Building strategic alliances, ethnics and protocol, Media relations, setting priorities and identifying pet projects during the plenary sessions, with Hon. Dorothy McAuliffe, wife of the former governor of Virginia state in USA as the lead resource person.

The one day summit had in attendance, former first ladies of the federal republic of Nigeria, president national council for women societies, Country representative of UNICEF, a former female deputy governor, and other stakeholders.
