Freedom as we have it, is a global phenomenon and at that, a great commodity sorted after by humanity. It is the liberty to express oneself in diverse ways on different occasions. It is a platform for the expression of ones will, opinion and choice.
As pleasant as this may sound, freedom without restrictions is poisonous. In as much as it is a free domain, we should not be in a hurry to forget that a domain has its boundaries. There is always something relative to our freedom. which is in fact what defines our freedom. This is so when we are not just willing but able to act beyond the control and dictates of such a thing.
On our journey through life, we have to limit ourselves in some areas, in order to reach certain limits in life. When we have certain aptitudes it takes time and discipline to release such potentials. This in essence implies that we do have to place restrictions on certain areas of our lives so we can gain the freedom to develop other areas in their order of priority, beginning with the most paramount. This means, restrictions actually set us free.
In the reasons for God, Timothy Keller captures this point beautifully. “Discipline and restraints, then, liberate us only when they fit with the reality of our nature and capacities. A fish because it absorbs oxygen from water rather than air, is only free if it is restricted and limited to water. If we put it in the grass its freedom to move and live is not enhanced, but destroyed. The fish dies if we do not honour the reality of its nature”.
This is applicable to us as humans. We have to place certain restrictions on the kind of lifestyle we adopt, the friends we keep, the places we visit, the things we say and in general the kind of actions we take. This is necessary in order that, we may gain the freedom to live a productive and effective life. According to Sean McDowell and Stan Jantz in the mind blowing ‘GodQuest’, “submitting to reality is the first step in finding freedom. That is why truth is so important”.
So therefore, in order to lead a meaningful and peaceful life we have to confine our freedom within the walls of truth. Because according to Sean McDowell and Stan Jantz.
-we are free to believe what we want, but we are not free to change reality.
-the truly free person understands truth and has the capacity to live it out.
This therefore implies that, knowing the truth helps us place restrictions on falsehood. And in turn gain the freedom required to live out the truth.
Thank you.
