Prof. Olayinka Adegbehingbe, the Obafemi Awolowo University lecturer who was kidnapped on Sunday, has revealed that N5.045 million was paid to secure his release.

Adegbehingbe made the disclosure on Tuesday in an interview with newsmen at his Ile-Ife residence.

The university don, who said he was hale and hearty, attributed his release to the power of God.

He said the kidnappers, whom he described as herdsmen, had initially demanded N30 million but later collected N5.045m after much negotiation.

He condemned the level of insecurity across the country, saying majority of the youths were jobless and had now resorted to crime.

He called for community policing as well as provision of employment for the youths, saying “idle hands are the devil’s workshop.’’

“The federal government needs to invest more in security; we need to know the identity of people coming in and going out of the town, state and the country at large,” he said.

“The people who abducted me were herdsmen and they had four guns and multiple rounds of ammunition as well as different dangerous weapons.

“I also thank the security operatives, the entire OAU and OAUTHC communities, our families, church members and all other well wishers for their prayers and other support rendered.”

To link insecurity to joblessness will be one of the greatest mistakes Nigeria will make.

We should not overlook the get rich mentality which is a symptom of the poor mentality pervasive in our society.

NDDC is currently doing lots of roads in Port Harcourt but alas majority of the workforce is from the south east and Akwa Ibom, when you see Rivers people engaged they are from Ahoada, Ogoni, not the Ikwerres that claim ethnic landlords/indigenes.

The Govt should be quick to act, it's easier earning N50k before N5m rather than earning N5m and going down to N50k..

The fact that everything went smoothly and he survived is due to divine intervention in some way. Neglect the role of divine intervention (God) at your own peril.
