Shehu Sani, lawmaker representing Kaduna Central at the Senate, has revealed why traditional rulers are often been victimized by their state governors.

Mr Sani, an outgoing lawmaker, said the absence of clearly defined roles of the monarchs in the Nigerian Constitution made them preys in the hands of their state governors.

He stated this while reacting to the current travails of Lamido Sanusi, the embattled emir of Kano, who watched helplessly while his domain was balkanized in a bid to whittle down his influence in the state.

Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano State governor signed a bill aimed at balkanizing the emirate on Wednesday. He is also said to be probing the financial earnings of the monarch, a move political analysts suggested will finally see Sanusi being booted out of office.

For the Kaduna lawmaker, traditional rulers whose duty are mainly in areas of security, ought to be protected by the constitution.

“Absence of clearly defined roles in the constitution makes traditional rulers vulnerable to the abuse of power, victims of blackmail and pawns and punching bags in the political chess game of their respective states,” Sani said in a Facebook post early Friday.

“During elections, they are forced to campaign for their states Governors and the ruling parties in their respective states or risk being dethroned.

“Traditional rulers are expected to play major roles in security matters with no security votes other than handouts thrown at them by their states Governors.

“A Traditional ruler who wants to survive must be stupidly loyal, dumb and humiliatingly subservient and one that must always distance himself from the political adversaries of the Governor in office.

“Traditional rulers doing a Governors bidding can hardly be accused of aiding kidnappers or inciting inter ethnic violence even if its true. State Governors habitually creates political emirates and chiefdoms to settle scores or to reward loyalty or to reinforce their power base or for the purpose of divide and rule.

“The Traditional rulers are also not free of blame, when most of them have bastardized and commercialized the institution by dispensing Traditional tittles to people in Government and those that can pay. They create and sale funny titles with no historical basis, roots and antecedent, and to people majorly undeserving.

*Almost All Governors parade one or multiple fake Traditional titles given to them while in office. Traditional institutions have being largely desecrated by political interference, partisanship, erosion of cultural and moral values, materialism and outright violations and meddling, inimical and corrosive to the very ethical and moral component that the institution claims to possess.

“Without constitutional protection, Traditional rulers will continue to be forced by their Governors to behave like party Excos or political appointees or be ejected,” he added.

Senator Sani is spot on.

majority of our Governors are tyrants.
The will sack local Government the can't control, shut down radio stations that criticise 'em, bribe State house of assembly members to impeach a speaker that doesn't do his bidding etc.

Even though I don't subscribe to the victimization of traditional rulers, but truth is this traditional rulers are adding almost nothing to the economy and betterment of the common man.

They never bring foreign investment, never think of supporting tech, during communal crises you will never see them, they are mostly dummy heads who feel entitled, they are mostly there for figure head and showmanship, I won't mind if they are completely scraped.

Quote me to state at least 3 major things your your home town/village king has done in the past five year to better you or your community

Before Fulani came in and annexed everything to themselves through bloody jihad, wasn't what is now present day Kano state a multiple Kingdoms with seperate Rulers? Why must a Fulani Emir supercede other Hausa traditional ruler in their own land.

While lawmakers were working on the bill, where was shehu sani, atleast there was public hearing and 2/3 of kano state lawmakers agreed to it.

It's not only fourth arm, it's third leg and second head grin. Traditional institutions should be scrapped. They are nothing but money pits that are gulping state funds doing almost nothing but marrying more wives and living in opulence while their domain remain poverty zones.

Imagine someone eating N6 billion he didn't work for, state funds that should go to developing the state and providing amenities for the people, one person swallowed it in the name of traditional ruler. Those guys are crooks. I support Ganduje. And more so, other state governors should follow suit and curb the massive corruption going on within these traditional institutions.

So we should destroy the tradition and get rid of the kings? Something that has been in existence for YEARS.

So the Queen of England or Emperor of Japan should be scrapped?
