Niger-Delta militant groups have yet again seized oil workers from a bar in Warri. The full news report can be found on BBC : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/6618093.stm

I was previously of the opinion that we were going too far with these kidnappings. Until I realised that Nigeria isn't the only country suffering from this exploitation. Instead, we are the only country going down the violence against oil-workers route. The question is : Are we doing the right thing? Could we campaign without violence against these people like Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Rossport 5 (who were thrown into prison) and expect to make a change?

Tell us about the other countries in which this act is prevalent and which do not take drastic measures against it.

If you watch the video you'll see that there were campaigners in Ireland over this same issue but they never acted with violence towards oil workers. Instead they took other 'softer' measures and guess what? Nothing happened. Instead, they were thrown in jail. In Colombia, the Uwa tribe only gained attention internationally after threatening to commit mass suicide if plans to drill their land weren't halted. Reference : www.afn.org

This is so confusing. How is Ireland similar to Nigeria if "they never acted in violence against oil workers"?

Well, for one they had a similar problem of exploitation without compensation. They have demonstrated, protested and appealed to no avail. We have done the same and now, gone a step further.

Sorry if I'm being confusing. . . Maybe I should re-phrase the original post to say "we are the only country going down the violence against oil-workers route"

Its high time the federal government gives the oil producing communities and indeed all communities in nigeria their due attention in terms of provision of basic social amenities.

otokx you think it's up to the Federal government? where was all the revenue given to the state been going? what has the governors and the local councilmen been doing? I've said it once and again, charity begins at home. let them, start kidnapping their senators, governors and council leaders. Then they will see change until then, the money will be given and embezzled and we will be in the same spot again.
