Decentralization Of Kano Emirate: A Great Tyranny Perpetrated Under The Shield Of The Law And In The Name Of Social Justice

By Giwa Murtala Omotola - Moore

As a progressive Youth what i resolved to do initially was to keep mute over the recent happening in Kano State against the neoteric bill that was passed by Kano State House Of Assembly, the bill to "create additional Four first class Emirates" in Kano State. I came to realise that if we don't speak who will speak for us and I also discern the fact that silence is a mammoth crime against humanity, our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter to us and the farthest measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of pleasure and comfortability, but where he stands at the times of challenge and controversy.

Platonically, Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty. Is democracy a cause or a blessing to our Nation?. I was surprise when I heard it yesterday on radio programme on my way home in a public transport that Kano State House Assembly lawmakers have approved the bill for the amendment of the local government and chieftaincy affairs law and that Governor Umar Ganduje have also assented to the bill the same day the bill was passed by the lawmakers. The four new Emirates will be situated in Rano, Gaya, Karaya and Bichi.

There is no tyranny greater than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice. Its glaring that Umar Ganduje move is a ploy to reduce the influence of the incumbent Emir of Kano, he did that so that he will be able to use divide and rule tactics among the emirs when the need arises.

The state government have murdered one of the largest and greatest emirate in Sub-sahara Africa, the decentralisation of the Kano Emirate have thereby reduced the number of emirates under the influence of the sitting Emir of Kano. There is no regard for our long age custom and tradition. The Emirate that has been in existence even before the birth of the Governor.

How can we neglect our culture for political gains, it's very sad that we don't attribute any uniqueness to our culture and tradition again, how can the state government speedily decentralize an emirate that was created in 1805 and the council that was formed in 1903 after the British pacification of the Sokoto Caliphate.

In 1963 Ado Bayero became the emir, he reigned for 50 years until his death in 2014 then Emir Muhammed Sanusi II takeover from him, he is still the emir till date. We must understand that Ganduje is not destroying HRH Sanusi Muhammed Sanusi II, his agenda is to divide and undermine one of the strongest and most reputable institution as well as one of the most treasured heritage in Africa, just for political vendetta. Why not dethrone the Emir instead of destroying the emirate?

However, the action of the Kano State Government and Kano State House of Assembly members towards HRH Sanusi Muhammad Sanusi II is melancholic in nature. The Emir is truly a benevolent, intelligent and progressive King. He’s a rare gem. To many the Kano Emirate symbolizes the perseverance of the North. What Governor Umar Ganduje did is an insult to the heritage and culture of Kano's emirate. This is utterly miraculous and disrespectful to our age long culture and tradition. We must put an end to this act so that other Governors will not adopt this same divide and rule strategy.

Sardauna Bello had removed Emir Sanusi the First in a classic act of political vendetta but that did not stop his grandson from coming back to the throne in glory.

Obafemi Awolowo had removed Alaafin Adeyemi the Second from the throne in similar circumstance, but did not forever seal the fate of his son Adeyemi the Third from coming back to improve on the record and legacy of his father.

General Adebayo had sent Olowo Olagbegi the Second into exile for 25 years but the man came back to die on the throne and was succeeded by his first son.

Premier Samuel Ladoke Akintola had cut down the salary of Oba Adesanya the Odemo of Ishara to one Penny at one point in his reign but the valiant monarch survived the ordeal.

Maximum Dictator Sani Abacha had dethroned Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki in similar circumstance.

Governor Ajimobi of Oyo State had used his transient power to intimidate and victimize the Olubadan to no avail. In roughly a fortnight from today, Ajumobi’s vendetta and autocratic regime in Ibadan would be History.

Ganduje of Kano is again using his transient power as Governor to humiliate, frustrate and embarrass Lamido Sanusi who is far above his pay grade in all aspects of life.

I once wondered aloud more than 2 years ago in an article on Lamido Sanusi if his decision or choice to go become the Emir of Kano would not come back to hunt him given his courage to call a spade a spade in a society where people like him are considered a threat.

Like you Ambassador Tunde Odofin, I stand shoulder to shoulder with the great Emir of Kano, a man of timber and caliber an erudite Economist and a man of History who could end up pretty much like his principled grandfather in the political Armageddon of Kano or Nigerian Politics.

I personally detest what is going on in Nigeria today where the Rule of Law is nothing more than a slogan to be mindlessly trampled upon by the ruling Oligarchy.

Sad to say, our leaders in Government now take their cue from what is happening in America the so-called Bastion of Democracy.

Of course, a yoruba Muslims opinion.

As it Stands Sanusi is no longer the emir of kano... Can someone clarify the name of sanisi's emirate?

In few days time traditional rulers from the north will go and see Buhari.. and the four emirs will be there sitting together.
