The release of Lamar Odom’s new memoir “Darkness to Light” is approaching, and with it comes one heck of an excerpt released Friday to People.

The scene: Lamar Odom realizing one of his biggest dreams with an offer to join the 2004 U.S. Olympics basketball team. The problem: A drug test was required to join the team, and Odom had been “smoking weed every day that summer.”

That’s quite a story from Odom, but also another reminder of how much drug addiction had taken control of his career, even when he was thriving in the earlier stages of his career. Doctors reportedly called the big man a “walking miracle” due to his recovery from an overdose in a Nevada brothel that threatened his life.
