What was the most brutal form of capital punishment in the ancient world?

Romans, due to other nations (i.e. Carthage) from the Mediterranean, at some point began to use elephants for military purposes. Sometimes, in order to execute the convict, they were laid on the ground, and the animal was ordered to stand on the head / body of the victim.

Writer Valerius Maximus s (1st century CE) mentions that Lucius Emilius Paulus Macedonian after defeating in 168 BCE of the Macedonian king, Perseus, ordered the elephants to crush the bodies of the three deserters. Another solution was putting a heavy stone on the victim's chest, causing strangling and death.

Finally, it is worth mentioning a different form of execution. The convict was dressed in a special tunic called tunica molesta, which was covered with a flammable substance, i.e. oil. Then the convict was set on fire in the arena, to the delight of the viewers.
