13 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BUILD
YOUR OWN HOUSE
Building a house should not be
seen as luxury to any body, it is a
necessity. Nelson Mandela said ’’If a
man has not built a house, he
has not got a home ’’. Another wise
man said ’’If you have not built
your own house, you have not
started living ’’. He also said ’’If you
have no roof on your head, you
have no root ’’.
Building your own house should be
your focus; it should be your
prayer, hunger, aspiration, joy and
vision.
All animals are homely in nature.
Birds build nests, lions make dens
and rats drill holes for themselves.
It is only human beings that rent
houses.
In this report, I will be telling you
reasons why you must build your
own house.
1. TO PREPARE FOR OLD AGE.
One of the best ways to prepare
for old age is to build your own
house. What do you think will
happen when you celebrate your
80th
birthday and still need to pay
rent?
2. RENT IS RISING.
In a particular area, rent was
about N45,000 for three bedrooms
a
year, in 1986. By 2006, it has
become N200,000. How much do
you think
it will be in the next 20 years at
that rate (which is about 450%
increase)? A woman said she
rented a house (I guess a room)
for N300
per month. That was ten years
ago. Now she pays N2,500 per
month.
Get out of that house, go and
build your own; no matter how
prayerful
you are, rent will continue to
increase.
3. TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE WISE.
Only wise people build; fools will
continue to pay rent to the wise.
You are not wise until you build;
you are not rich until you are
living in your own house.
4. BUILDING MATERIALS ARE BECOMING
COSTLIER.
If you are waiting till the time a
bag of cement will become N100
before you build, then you may
never build. Building materials are
becoming more costly. The earlier
you build, the better.
5. LANDLORDS ARE DIFFICULT.
You are not in your landlord’s
house because he loves you, his
relationship with you is purely
financial and, don ’t make the
mistake
of thinking that he will not
increase the rent. Not only that,
there
will be a lot of rules and
regulations like ’’You must not use
generator’’, ’’you must not pound
yam’’, etc. I heard of someone
whose
landlord said he must arrive home
every day before 8pm or the gate
will be locked; and that he must
not bring his car into the
compound
(may be because the landlord did
not have a car). To be totally free
from landlords, you must build
your own house.
6. IT IS THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE
FOR RETIREMENT.
It is like a death sentence if you
retire without a roof over your
head; start preparing for
retirement now by building your
own house.
7. IT IS THE BEST LEGACY FOR YOUR
CHILDREN.
The best thing you can leave for
your children is a house, not cars,
clothes or even money.
8. TO HAVE A PERMANENT HOUSE
ADDRESS.
Until you build your own house,
you have not gotten a house
address.
Tenants are known for moving
from one house to another due to
one
reason or the other, losing friends
and breaking relationships in the
process.
9. FOR PEACE OF MIND.
Most tenants are always afraid
and apprehensive towards the
time the
rent is due, while landlords will be
happy as the ’’payday’’ draws
closer. Tenants are always afraid
of three things:
a. Payment Of Old Rent.
Some tenants have to take loan,
save extensively or even sell some
of
their properties so as to meet up
with the payment.
b. Increment In House Rent.
Tenants are also afraid of the
possibility of an increment of the
rent which is often done when a
rent is due.
c. Quit Notice.
This is the most painful thing to a
tenant, because quit notice may
be
a way of increasing the rent or
for the tenant to leave the
premises
and look for another apartment.
If you build your own house, you
will have rest of mind, no fear, no
quit notice or increment.
10. PROBLEMS OF AGENTS.
Agents are another source of
problem to tenants. They make
things too
difficult for tenants, some dupe
tenants while some collect more
than
10% agency fee thereby causing
tenants untold hardship. The only
way
to avoid the problem of agent is
to build your own house.
11. FOR LONGEVITY.
Do you want to live long? One way
to avoid high blood pressure and ill
health is building your own house.
To live long will be difficult if
you live perpetually under the
fear of rent increase, quit notices,
payment of rent etc.
12. PROBLEMS OF CO-TENANTS.
Tenants fight on virtually
everything; they fight about
toilet,
bathroom, kitchen (depending on
the type of house). To avoid all
these, you must build your own
house.
13. TO FULFILL ONE OF LIFE’S SIMPLE
GOALS.
Getting married, having children,
building a house are some life ’s
goals. Almost every body achieves
the first two, but few people
achieve the last one. I pray you
will achieve it. Building a house is
must for an all-round success.

Sometimes, when you think of the stress involved in
1. Buying land in your choice location
2. Preparing and clearing the land
3. Obtaining a building plan
4. Stress, cost and inflation on building materials (fakes and originals)
5. Stress, cost and headache of workmen (quacks and professionals)
6. The periodic maintenance required to keep the house standing.

My brother, sometimes it is easier and more flexible to relocate as a tenant whenever you feel like moving. For example, if the road becomes bad, the area becomes flooded, insecurity issues, bad neighbors etc.

well, it is a personal issue.

despite your valid points above the thought of renting at 50 is scary. actually gives me nightmares. while one may be relocating in their youth every 2 to 3 years, once a wife and children come into the picture one needs stability, and an egg nest of an investment to supplement the pension/gratuity post retirement. all 6 points will be negated in future once your property appreciates [no matter how long it takes]. cheers bro

Build where you will live now, dont go to your village and build a costly mansion and come back to the city to pay rent. These are the types that harrass the landlord and remind them "Oga, if only person dey carry house travel"
young men of 25+ build houses in the village and then come back and live in the city for the next 50 years, paying rent for 50 years before retiring to the village to live in the now desolate,

outdated mansions.
