The question on the lip of an average Nigerian is whether the country of our collective dream could ever be actualized. Nigeria can only begin her walk to true greatness if the executive is complemented by a very effective legislative arm. It is needless to state that no legislative arm can be expectedly effective without principal officers that are strictly chosen on the basis of merit, competence and experience.

All elected federal lawmakers, particularly my colleagues in the lower legislative chamber are expected to rise above partisan and personal interests by ensuring the election of Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives.

It has been said that a great person attracts great people and knows how to hold them together. Femi Gbajabiamia is not just a great lawmaker, he is undoubtedly the all embracing best to help in actualizing a greater Nigeria through the instrumentality of innovative legislation. He is also a man of extreme cerebral powers and the charisma to competently pilot the affairs of the lower legislative chamber. It is important to note that no nation can ever attain greatness as long as the very best amongst the citizenry are not in leadership position. Cerebral Gbajabiamila proved his brilliance at the King Williams College, Isle of Man, United Kingdom where he graduated at the top of his 'A Levels' class around 1980. He repeated the same feat at John Marshall Law School in Atlanta Georgia where he also graduated top of his class and earned himself a Juris Doctorate.

The 56 year old Gbajabiamila is a loyal party man that is always prepared to sacrifice his personal ambition for the interest of his party. He is also a man of proven passion for his country. He has consistently over the years championed the call for fiscal federalism and accountability in public spending. It is apropos to note that Gbajabiamila was the first and only legislator to have mustered the courage to move such motion in the House.

The amply demonstrated instances of patriotic courage by Gbajabiamila was what brought about a popular cliché amongst members of the House that “the fear of Gbajabiamila is the beginning of wisdom". The man has simply earned profound respect from colleagues.

Another demonstrated height of patriotism by Gbajabiamila was in 2011 when he truthfully turned down his nomination for a high ranking National Award of the Officer of the Federal Republic, (OFR). His reason was that he did not deserve it and that the awards system in Nigeria was no longer achieving its original intent. Could there have been a better act of patriotism than this? Gbajabiamila thereafter, went ahead to put up an amendment to the National Honors Act of 1964 for stringent guidelines in the selection of National Award nominees. Femi Gbajabiamila has thus became the third and youngest Nigerian to have rejected National Honours after Late Chinua Achebe and Prof. Grace Alele-Williams.

It is without doubt that the speakership aspiration of Femi Gbajabiamila is an idea whose time has come. Acceptability of his speakership aspiration has no doubt cut across tribes and party lines. Governor Willy Obiano of Anambra state had urged Gbajabiamila and Wase to always prioritise issues that concern Anambra State when they become the presiding officers. In the words of Obiano, “I know Gbajabiamila. He is not someone who would say it is black now and it would suddenly turn to white. That is why I’ve been campaigning for him for long".
The story of acceptance was not different with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state. The Governor in Port Harcourt that he would support Gbajabiamila because he had shown over the years to be able, capable and experienced enough to lead the next House. Woke had further stressed that his support for Gbajabiamila and Wase was not based on party line nor ethnic considerations. “I don’t support you based on party lines; I support you based on capacity. When you get there, we must work as a people. Your party is just a vehicle to convey you to your political destination”. Wike said.

Succinctly put, the chance to put Nigeria on the right footing beckons now through the candidature of Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the 9th House. The United States Bureau of African Affairs (AF) has disclosed that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, was listed as an aide of Senate President Bukola Saraki.

In a tweet by Lauretta Onochie, a media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari the Bureau of African Affairs which is part of the US Department of State and which is charged with advising the Secretary of State on matters of Sub-Saharan Africa said he was in Washington DC on diplomatic arrangements.

“We cannot apprehend Atiku because of our diplomatic ties with Nigeria, he’s being booked as an ‘aide’ to Nigeria’s Senate President,” AF said.

It would be recalled that Atiku who for 12 years was unable to enter the US following corruption indictment against him, arrived Washington on Thursday in company of Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Contrary to denials, the Nigerian Compass yesterday learnt that the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) confirmed that a former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Bola,

Ahmed Tinubu, ran a heroin ring in the country; was convicted, though with an option of fine; and was actually quizzed last month while entering into the country.

Documents available to the Nigerian Compass showed that the United States Government has written the Nigerian Government, highlighting the fact that Tinubu ran a cocaine ring in the country.

According to the document, signed by the United States Government Narcotics Attache in its embassy in Nigeria, Andre W. Kellum, Tinubu operated an organisation that distributed cocaine.

Kellum said that though Tinubu was not subjected to criminal prosecution, the fact that he acceded to forfeiting funds to the United States Government was on its own a conviction.

Kellum’s letter was a response to a petition pertaining to Tinubu’s suitability to stand for re-election in 2003 as the governor of Lagos State.

The petitioner said that Tinubu, owing to his conviction in the United States for running a drug cartel, was not suitable to stand for election in Nigeria.

In the letter dated April 9, 2003, addressed to the former Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Alhaji Bello Lafiaji, Kellum wrote, “After consultation with the Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of International Affairs (OIA), this is in response to the above referenced matter, regarding Bola Ahmed TINUBU (emphasis that of Kellum).

“Pursuant to the aforementioned request, the Lagos, Nigeria Country Office (LNCO) of the Drug Enforcement Administration immediately contacted DOJ/OIA officials. Copies of documents received by the LNCO from the NDLEA were forwarded to these officials for verification.

“As such, please note that paragraphs 4, 5 and 6 of the complaint indicates that persons named therein operated an organisation that distributed heroin and the proceeds of that illegal distribution were in the subject acounts to be forfeited. The complaint references U.S. (criminal) money laundering and (criminal) drug statutes as the authority under which the forfeiture occurs. Nevertheless, note that the complaint in this civil action identifies the funds as the defendant (Tinubu), not the account holders.

“Likewise, the Decree of Forfeiture, signed by a U.S. District Judge, identifies the criminal statutory authority for the civil forfeiture of the funds without regard to whether there is a corresponding criminal prosecution.

“The facts revealed in the U.S. Investigation of the funds and their source are detailed in the affidavit filed by the Internal Revenue Service.

In the letter from the NDLEA that resulted in Kellum’s reaction, the lead anti-narcotic agency in Nigeria said that the conclusion it could draw was that Tinubu’s drug case was yet to be closed by the United States.

The letter, in its opinion section, noted, “Former paragraph 6 above, Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu was involved in Money Laundering Transactions along with Mueez Adegboya Akande and Abiodun Agbele in the United States of America.

“Even though he was not charged to court, he had to compromise the case. Otherwise, he would have lost the whole money.

“Arising from the case, Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu forfeited 460,000 US dollars to the United States Government being proceeds of narcotic trafficking or property involved in financial transactions in violation of 18 USO 1956 and 1957 and therefore was forfeitable to the United States (emphasis that of the NDLEA).

The last time I checked, US Visa is not among the requirements for membership of the Nigerian Legislature. That was how some people pushed that 'maga' to go and negotiate away NNPC with some foreign crooks, thinking that was all that is needed to become Nigerian President! Now they have pushed him again into the Election Litigation gauntlet. The first shot fired against him will end up sealing his faith as a Cameronigerian and inelligible for further participation in Presidential Elections!

Gbaja is so qualified on all fronts that it will take a miracle to deny him! The same USA some of us worship will readily bring a convict out of prison term to solve a national problem, if he proves good enough!
