UNILORIN, ABU, RSU, UNIMAID, Kaduna Poly Win JAMB Merit Awards for Outstanding Performance in 2018 Admission Exercise

Five tertiary institutions in the country, including the University of Ilorin, have won the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) Merit Award for outstanding performance in the 2018 admission exercise.

At the award ceremony, held in Abuja last Thursday (May 23, 2019), the University of Ilorin was honoured for being the “most subscribed institution by candidates with a total of 86,401 candidates”.

Other tertiary institutions that won similar awards were: Kaduna Polytechnic, the “most national institution with best in national spread of intakes”; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, “institution with the highest number of admission of international students”; Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, “most improved institution over previous year in intake of female students”; the University of Maiduguri, “most compliant institution in keeping within guideline, rules and regulations of admission”.

Each of the universities received a cheque of N25 million from JAMB.

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who handed over the awards to the recipient institutions, said that tertiary institutions played important role to the survival of a nation.

Prof. Osinbajo, who was represented by the Senior Special Assistant in the office of the Vice President, Mrs Maryam Uwais, urged every institution to maintain and attain an acceptable standard.

In his remarks, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu congratulated all tertiary institutions in the country for the sustenance of peace in their various campuses.

Mallam Adamu also urged other parastatals of government to support institutions of higher learning in their bid to promote national development.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, said that the idea of the award was developed during the policy meeting on admission into tertiary institutions in 2016.

Prof. Oloyede noted that the introduction of the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) in 2017 by the board led to the automation of the admission processes, devoid of any human interaction or influence.

He said that this was aimed at ensuring that the candidates that genuinely prepared and excelled in their matriculation examinations are suitably placed in tertiary institutions.

The JAMB Registrar added that certain criteria were followed for the five categories of awards and prizes.

He, therefore, urged beneficiaries of the awards to submit a project for execution in their institutions, which would not be more than N25 million on which the amount would be expended.
