For allegedly beating man to death
For allegedly beating a man to death, three officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and two civilians have been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command.

The suspects were alleged to have beaten the deceased, Alade Ijiola, in Sabo area of Abeokuta, last Friday, blue and black, thus leading to his death.

The Nigerian Compass learnt yesterday that the incident happened when a team of NSCDC officials stormed Ogunlolu Street, Sabo, to arrest some suspected land dredgers, who allegedly dug a nearby stream to collect sharp sand.

Eyewitnesses said a landlord in the area (name withheld) actually invited the officers, who subsequently arrested some of the suspects.

However, while attempting to whisk the suspects away in the NSCDC Hilux pick-up van marked CD 112 A01, the suspects were alleged to have resisted, thus degenerating into violence.

In the process, a handcuffed Ijiola was beaten black and blue, and he died immediately.

When it dawned on them that the suspect had been killed, the Nigerian Compass gathered that the NSCDC officials fled the scene and abandoned his corpse.

It was further learnt that men of the Sabo Divisional Police Station, who reportedly arrived the scene shortly after, apprehended some suspects and transferred them to the State Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the state capital.

When contacted yesterday, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said that he had not been briefed on the incident and, therefore, could not comment on it, but a top police source confirmed the arrest of the officers and said the command was investigating the degree of their culpability.

Effort to reach the state Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Mr. Kareem Olanrewaju, for comment failed.
