Chelsea reject Maurizio Sarri's final request as he prepares for Juventus job

Chelsea have agreed to let Maurizio Sarri join Juventus after rebuffing his offer to remain at Stamford Bridge, with the move expected to be announced in the coming days.

The Italian had an excellent campaign in charge of the Blues, finishing third in the Premier League and winning the Europa League, though he struggled to win over fans and endured some problematic moments – notably losing 6-0 to Manchester City.

Chelsea had been considering getting rid of Sarri prior to the win over Arsenal in Baku, though Juventus were impressed with his work and made him their top choice to replace Massimiliano Allegri.

According to The Times, Sarri met with Chelsea officials on Friday to discuss his future and had been willing to see out the remainder of his contract, provided they bought into his footballing vision and offered more public backing.

But Chelsea’s hierarchy declined and feel that it is in the best interests of all parties for Sarri’s reign to come to a premature end.

After being given the green light to leave Stamford Bridge, Sarri flew to Italy where he has held talks with Juventus and a deal is expected to be announced in a matter of days.

The 60-year-old is relatively indifferent about leaving Chelsea so soon into his tenure, with fans rallying against ‘Sarri-ball’, and is exciting about the project he will inherit in Turin.

Juventus will still be expected to buy out the final year of Sarri’s contract, which is valued at around £5million.

Chelsea very nearly sacked Sarri halfway through the season and are happy to let him leave – particularly as they have avoided a pay-off – with Derby County manager, and club legend, Frank Lampard the favourite to take over.
