A young model, who ignored warnings of sharks in the ocean and went swimming, had her leg ripped off by one of the sharp-toothed beasts.

Paige Winter, 17, was attacked by a shark while swimming at Fort Macon State Park, North Carolina, around noon on Sunday.

Her father, who was nearby, heroically leapt into the water and punched the shark in its face to save his daughter – but the girl lost a leg and several of her fingers in the brutal attack.

Just two days earlier, a fishing captain, Chad Morgan, recorded footage of several sharks in the water nearby where the girl was attacked.

Due to the danger, authorities raised a red flag warning on the beach, which means that no one is allowed in the water at Fort Macon.

But the young model ignored the warnings and went into the water for a swim.

Witness Lacy Whorton said: “All of a sudden, everyone started screaming, and I looked to my left and they were rushing towards this little girl. She looked little but she’s actually 17.”

A shark “the size of a vehicle” was biting Paige Winter’s body, and clamped onto the teenager’s leg with its razor-like teeth, as stunned onlookers watched.

The girl’s father, a former US Marine, ran into the water and forcefully punched the shark’s snout up to five times, making the creature release its jaws from the teen.

Unfortunately, when rescuers pulled Paige out of the water, the poor girl’s left leg was “almost completely severed,” according to County Fire Dispatch records.

The teen suffered “deep lacerations to her leg, pelvic and hand areas” in the attack. After she was taken to hospital, doctors were forced to amputate the girl’s leg and several of her fingers.

Specialists now are investigating what may have caused the shark to attack Paige Winter so viciously.

The girl is relatively petite, which likely made her an easier target to the predator, says Taylor Bowden, a professor at the University of Florida.

Sharks also have an extremely powerful sense of smell, and can detect “one drop of blood in an Olympic-sized swimming pool,” says Dr. Richard Gaynor, a biologist with the investigation.

According to Dr. Gaynor, the girl may have been menstruating when she entered the ocean and discharged blood into the water, which would have attracted the shark from nearby.

Despite the loss of her limbs, the 17-year-old put out a brave public statement from her hospital bed.

“Although I have extensive injuries, including an amputated leg and damage to my hands, I will be okay,” Paige Winter assured the public.

“I know I have a long road to recovery, which includes additional surgeries. I will continue to stay positive and be thankful that it was not worse,” she added, thanking the hospital for her care.
