Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God will on Friday be conferred with the title of Spiritual Pillar of Nigerian Sports.

Harrison Jalla, President of the National Association of Nigerian Footballers, the umbrella body of retired and active Nigerian footballers, disclosed this in Lagos on Tuesday. Jalla said the award is being jointly organised with Save Nigeria sports Initiative (SANSI), a body seeking the revival of sports in the country through spiritual means.

Key facilitators of the Initiative include former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West and Paul Bankole, a renowned grassroots football coach and newspaper columnist.

Jalla said the choice of Adeboye was the logical thing to do given his ceaseless intercession for Nigerian sports through prayer.

"Having followed his keen interest in sports, which has been fired since his school days as a footballer, boxer and volleyball player; his initiative of setting up the annual Redeemed Sports Festival and above all his consistent prayers for Nigerian sports particularly for all our national football teams before, during and after the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games until this moment, we felt that given the present crises wracking Nigerian sports, his intervention will continue to prove crucial," Jalla said.

A keen sportsman

Adeboye, one of the world's most respected religious leaders, was a keen sportsman during his days as a student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and his time as lecturer at the University of Lagos. While at Nsukka, he was a member of the schools' boxing team and even thought of going professional. He also played volleyball emerging one of the schools leading players.

Years later, when he became a lecturer at the University of Lagos, he was made coach of the school's volleyball team.

Speaking on the award, Taribo West, who has since become a pastor, said he was proud to be associated with the event noting that the conferment of the title of Spiritual Pillar of Nigerian Sports on Adeboye was an act that was long overdue.

"Daddy Adeboye is father to us all. He is a true friend of Nigerian sports. I remember during our days in the national team particularly during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, his prayers for us proved crucial. I cannot think of anyone that deserves this award more than him," West said.

The award, is scheduled to take place on Friday, October 1, 2010 at the Redemption Camp of the Redeemed Christian Church of God - along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, during the monthly Holy Ghost Service of the church.

A number of leading sports personalities in the country are said to have indicated the they will attend the event. They include Awoture Eleyae, former Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa; Segun Odegbami, former captain of the Green Eagles; Bola Jegede, a former member of the Nigeria Football Association; tennis legend, Thompson Onibokun; Oyuiki Obaseki, former Chairman of the Nigeria Premier League; former members of the Super Eagles - Daniel Amokachi, Peter Rufai, and Taju Disu; and Rafiu Ladipo, President of the Nigeria football Supporters Club, worldwide. Sam Ahmedu, the coordinator of Dodan Warriors Basketball Club; and Davidson Owumi, current chairman of the Nigerian Premier League are also expected.
