Are you concerned about breast cancer? Would you like to know breast cancer symptoms and breast cancer prevention? If you are concerned about breast cancer, you must be wondering if there are steps to take to prevent it.

Before I list the best ways to prevent breast cancer, let’s talk about breast cancer symptoms.

Breast cancer symptoms

In this article, I will list some of the breast cancer symptoms. However, understand that these symptoms may also be as a result of other health conditions that are not related to breast cancer. So be sure to visit a doctor once you notice any of the following signs and symptoms:

Change in the skin’s texture: Breast cancer can cause inflammation and changes in the skin cell. For instance, you may have scaly skin around the areola and nipple (as if you have skin sunburn or extremely dry skin). You may also notice skin thickening in any part of your breast.
• Nipple discharge: If you are not breastfeeding but are having nipple discharge with milky red, green or yellow colour, you need to see a doctor. Other things that can cause nipple discharge are; breast infection, a side effect of certain medication or birth control pills, variations in body physiology and certain medical issues like thyroid disease.
Dimpling: Having skin dimpling may be a result of inflammatory breast cancer, especially an aggressive type of breast cancer. It is important you speak to a doctor if you notice this symptom.
Lymph node change: lymph nodes are small and if cancer leaves the breast, it will first move to the underarm lymph node area on the same side of the breast affected by cancer. The area will start to swell. If you notice this, see a doctor.
Nipple or breast pain: f you are feeling pain, discomfort and tenderness in your breast, see a doctor.
Nipple inversion or retraction: Breast cancer can make cells behind the nipple change. Such change can cause the nipple to reverse or invert inward into the breast or look different in size.
Redness: Breast cancer can cause the skin to look bruised. The skin may become purple or red or have a bluish tint. If you notice this and have not experienced it before, see a doctor.
Swelling: breast cancer can make the entire breast or part of it swell. There may be a distinct lump after the swelling, but the affected breast may be different in size than the other one.

How to prevent breast cancer?

It is important to understand breast cancer prevention. Here are the best ways to prevent it:

Find out your family history: If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are likely to have it at some point in your life. Be sure to go for a check-up at least once a year if you have it in your family history.
Avoid birth control pills: If you are above age 35, try to avoid birth control pills. The lower the age, the lower the risk of breast cancer. It means the higher the age, the higher the risk of breast cancer. However, the risk gets reduced when you stop using birth control pills.
Avoid post-menopausal hormones: If you are to take post-menopausal hormones, it should be for a very short time because it increases the risk of breast cancer.
Breastfeed: Breastfeeding may help reduce the risk of breast cancer. So breastfeed if possible.
• Don’t smoke
Avoid alcohol: The more alcohol you take, the higher the risk of breast cancer.
