You may think your vehicle is consuming oil more than usual but it might be due to its age. So what is a normal oil consumption and when should you bring your car to the mechanic for inspection? See the answer below!

Anytime you are confused and need answers to any auto related question, just visit us at Naijauto.com and be rest assured, we’ve got your back with a plethora of practical answers.

Below is our auto expert answer for the question what is normal oil consumption for your car.

First, every driver needs to understand that, “wears” causes a vehicle to more likely consume a high amount of engine oil as the vehicle ages. Burning of too much oil is a very common type of problem, but whenever it is left/ignored, a vehicle’s engine is being put in danger of possible major damage.

Some of the common culprits that normally causes burning oil are;

- Piston rings
- Guides and seals
- Worn valve stems

All of these above components when problems can easily allow engine oil to get its way into a vehicle’s combustion chambers. And when such is happening, the amount of oil being burnt might be subtly not so large enough to cause a noticeable blue smoke from the exhaust but might be just enough to be noticeable from regularly checking the dipstick and performing oil top-ups.

So, how much oil burning is “normal” or “excessive”?

There are no generally specified metrics for judging “Normal” oil consumption in every car

1. Oil burning that is “Normal” in one car might be “Excessive” in another

Even though oil burning seems to be a very common problem, most automakers do not really provide proper and uniform guidance on the issue. So, what would be measured as “Normal” for one car’s engine could actually be observed as “excessive” for another vehicle’s engine.

Imagine the below observations;

- BMW tells its buyers that it is very “Normal” for its vehicle’s engines to usually burn about “a quart” of engine oil in less than 1000 miles.
- GM Motors on the hand said in their set of tips to operators have its vehicles in the fleet that engine oil consumption can actually be somewhere around “a quart” within just 2,000 miles range if the vehicle is properly maintained and driven well.
- Many other automakers do not even include any specifications in their owner’s manual regarding engine oil consumption.

So, the question of what’s “Normal” truly just depends on “whom” you really talk to.
