Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, is now wearing a new look in preparation for the nation's 50th independence anniversary on Friday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

NAN further reports that all major roads leading to the venue of the three-day celebration, Ilorin Metro Park, were being painted with the colours of the national flag on Thursday. The Kwara State Road Maintenance Agency was busy replacing the street lights and filling potholes on all major roads.
Ben Duntoye, the state's Commissioner for Information and Communication, explained that all facilities to be used would be ready by Thursday. According to him, the state government has concluded arrangements to engage U.S. based hip-hop artist, Akon, to perform at the 50th anniversary on Friday. He said that other entertainers expected to add colour to the celebrations include Tony Tetualla, Dbanj, and Wasiu Alabi Pasuma.
Also speaking on the issue, the Commissioner for Finance, Rasaki Atunwa, who did not disclose the amount earmarked for the anniversary, said the celebration would afford the government the opportunity to showcase its achievements in the last seven years. He said other activities lined up for the three-day events include Jumat prayer; Award and Dinner Night on October 1; Children's party to be hosted by the wife of the governor, Toyin Saraki, and musical concerts and fireworks on October 2. According to him, the programme will be rounded off on October 3, with the Interdenominational Church Service at CAC, Oke-Ayo, Sabo, Ilorin.
