President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the voluntary retirement of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Igbere TV reports.

The president announced his acceptance in a statement issued on Sunday, June 9, in Abuja, and made available to Igbere TV.

In the statement which was signed by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) on his behalf, Buhari said the voluntary retirement from service of Onnoghen as CJN was effective from May 28, 2019.

“The President thanked Justice Onnoghen for his service to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and wished him the best of retirement life,” Shehu added.

Igbere TV recalls that Justice Onnoghen had resigned from his position as CJN following the recommendation of the Judiciary Committee set up to look into the charges leveled against him, ranging from non-disclosure of assets, amongst others.

Well deserved.

If he wasn't guilty he wouldn't have sought retirement.
