This is what most of the Nigerian states should embrace. Have often said it, agriculture has not only dual but multiplier effects-food production for local consumption, Forex earnings, job creation, source of raw materials for our pharmaceutical industry etc. You can't go wrong venturing into agriculture as a state. Agriculture is us, we are agriculture. By my standard, any state which cannot generate an internal revenue greater than federal allocation is a failed state. Edo state for example has fertile soil and a very large expanse of land. So what stops the governor from investing in Agriculture. This will reduce crime rate to the bearest minimum. Agric based industries will be created. More competition created as a result of private sector involvement. I can go on and on. People like you and I need opportunities to govern our states.

Agriculture is powered by government subsidy n only FG can do it. It is capital intensive

I don't think so bro. Private sector can come in if federal government can provide enabling environment. Also, it could be inform of joint venture.

Go to America's Europe, Asia, etc.......Governments power agriculture. Private sectors don't have much interest in helping farmers, they want to rake in their own massive profits.

Government subvention runs large scale agriculture for the masses

If we have more of farms like Obasanjo farm, don't you think it will go a long way. And who told you agriculture isn't as profitable like every other business. And about funding, private sector can actually get the huge funds. If private sector can venture into distribution aspect of power, why not agric?....is power distribution not capital intensive too?

I made mention of providing enabling environment. This is infrastructure issue. A well developed transport system. Rail, cargo ship, cargo plane. When we have these alternatives, transport cost will be cheap. This apart, each states can focus on agricultural products they have comparative advantage for. So, if for example Edo produces yam tuber, Oyo may produce cocoa, Niger may produce rice. Just according to their strength.
