Fatalities in the multiple car bomb blasts in capital city Abuja have increased from 8 to 15, according to our sources on the ground.

Initially it was reported that 8 people were dead following two car bombs exploded near the new complex of the federal high court in Abuja during the independence day celebrations at the Eagle Square. The bombs which exploded on Shehu Shagari way also injured several people according to our initial reports. But hospital records and number of dead bodies seen by our reporters indicate a higher number of casualties than earlier reported.

There are indications that there were more than 2 car bombs, as several explosions were heard simultaneously in the city.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, (MEND) had earlier issued a statement alerting participants at the Nigeria @50 celebration to steer clear of the venue. Their statement said that there was nothing to celebrate in Nigeria after 50 years of independence.

See statement below:

“With due respect to all invited guests, dignitaries and attendees of the 50th independence anniversary of Nigeria being held today, Friday, October 1, 2010 at the Eagle Square Abuja, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) is asking everyone to begin immediate evacuation of the entire area within the next 30 minutes. This warning expires after 10.30Hrs.

“Several explosive devices have been successfully planted in and around the venue by our operatives working inside the government security services. “

Jonathan Condemns The Attacks As "A WICKED AND DASTARDLY ACT"

The bomb explosions which occurred near the Ministry of Justice in Abuja, and which claimed several lives are a low, dirty and wicked act of desperation by criminals and murderers who do not wish Nigeria well.

Coming at a time that the world had gathered together to celebrate Nigeria at 50, these bomb attacks are the worst anniversary gifts any nation can get.

Their purpose was to ensure that the celebration at Eagle Square was cancelled by all means. It is sad and unfortunate.

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan grieves with the families that have lost loved ones in the incidents. The president shares their consternation and understands their confoundment, as they mourn while the nation celebrates.

The president wants these families to know that their loved ones have not died in vain. Rather they have paid the supreme price for our unity; and in their death, they have watered the tree of our freedom.

To those behind these vicious acts, the president wants you to know that you will be found, and you will pay dearly for this heinous crime.

I just wonder what's wrong with this country. This presient's address is driving me nuts. So the common man on the street ve now been sentenced to die 4 the country's unity while the corrupt politicians are busy sharing the nations wealth. MEND ve shown an act of cowardice by killing innocent citizens. People who are still searching 4 thier daily bread. If u must bomb, you know who and where to bomb. It seems our president is shying away from security challenges in the country. Why not declare a state of emergency on security Mr. President? Aba, boko haram, abuja, kid/adult napping and so on. Damn it! Shame to Nigeria. Other African countries ve celebrated theirs maturedly but this is the picture we are projecting to the world on this great event. Smh.
