Where were you on the 12th of June, 1993? I was a 13 year old boy on the streets of Akure, I can still remember some of the campaign jingles of Chief MKO Abiola on OSRC radio and TV and also the Abiola milk and biro, the campaign was very fascinating and exciting. The presidential elections were held in Nigeria on 12 June 1993, the first since the 1983 military coup. The result was a victory for Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the Social Democratic Party , who defeated Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention. [1] However, the elections were later annulled by military ruler Ibrahim Babangida , leading to a crisis that ended with Sani Abacha leading a coup later in the years. The Candidate Party Votes Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola Social Democratic Party 8,341,309 Bashir Tofa National Republican Convention 5,952,087 Total 14,293,396
