[b]Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first Prime minister took his only annual leave in 1963 which he decided to spend in his village. A British photo journalist came calling, but was told the PM was on vacation. He asked to which country, but was shocked to hear his village. On getting to the village, there was no evidence or paraphernalia to show a big (influential) Nigerian man was there, everyone was busy with their chores.

He met a farmer with his donkey carrying bales of sugarcane, for the PM’s home, and he was utterly speechless when the farmer said, “I just left him, you will see him sitting on bare floor with his kids eating sugar cane that I gave them.”

The photo journalist indeed met them as described and went on to take a photograph that should debunk all suggestions that Nigerian Leaders do not have it in them to be simple and humble.

What a lesson to every single Nigeria on how to live in simplicity. It is gratifying to know that a Nigerian leader can actually exemplify this virtue.

What an epitome of simplicity and humility….

Let us wrestle our nation from the hands of those who kidnapped it. We shoud do it collectively with one voice. We should do individually, everyone doing his or her part to better her. For our children and the future generations behind them. If not for our generations or the older generations still alive.

Let us make our leaders feel that it is shameful the way they conduct our affairs. Let us let them learn simplicity of forms, so that they can function, for our collective benefits.

It is refreshing to see that Nigeria once had a humble son leading her. He was not concern about his own safety among his people. Do we have one lawmaker that is secured, even now?

Nothing has really changed in Nigeria.  For those of you who think Tafawa Balewa was typical of the politicians of those bygone days, please read this Time Magazine article on the first Nigerian coup of January 1966 in the link below:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,842386-1,00.html

In my opinion the strategy of Nigerian leaders since independence has always been this:  Divide, rule and steal.  If that doesn't work, plan and execute a coup and promise to hold elections as soon as practicable (don't give any firm dates).   It is simple but it works all the time, just like 419.

"Our enemies," said Nzeogwu, "are the political profiteers, the men that seek bribes, those that seek to keep the country divided permanently so they can remain in office as Ministers, tribalists and nepotists, those that have corrupted our society and put the political calendar back." This is as true as it is today as it was back in 1966 Nigeria. Have we really learned anything in 50 years as an independent country?
Re: Picture Nigeria - Then, In 1963 - Now, In 2010 by hercules07: 4:22pm On Oct 02, 2010
There was corruption in their time but compared to now, they are boy scouts.
Re: Picture Nigeria - Then, In 1963 - Now, In 2010 by Reference(m): 4:41pm On Oct 02, 2010
I will only agree most independence leaders were whiter that white if corruption is the only reason we are why we are. This is an acid test for most Nigerians. Do we know what is actually wrong with this country. If it was so good how come it turned out so bad. Were the first post independence leaders moving this country in the right direction. If so who then was the devil that derailed it or were we left a titanic by the British.
Re: Picture Nigeria - Then, In 1963 - Now, In 2010 by Prince22(m): 5:04pm On Oct 02, 2010
Pictures does not really matters, this is a country where young school leavers Secondary and first degree holder are not ready for work experience, they want to become SENATORS by fire by force, Motor park Chiefs are not also left behind
The old pictures and where Abu spent his leave then was the bestas at that time as there was security to life
