As Nigeria gets set to celebrate June 12 as its democracy day, pro democracy activists are in a festive mood all over the country. For the first time elements across the political divide are united in commending President Muhammadu Buhari for setting the records straight by recognising the injustices done to Basorun MKO ABIOLA, the widely acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 Presidential election.

While Nigerians jubilate, it is obvious that former President Olusegun Obasanjo will be quietly regretting his failure to honour his kinsman during his reign. Obasanjo having hailed from Ogun state and the key beneficiary of the June 12 struggle surprisingly kept mute on the injustices meted to MKO Abiola. Obasanjo was so much obsessed with a desire for personal glory that he completely forgot a man whose death compelled the political heavy weights in the North to decide that in the spirit of “National Reconciliation” the presidency should be zoned to the South-west.

This singular decision ensured that the two aspirants that contested the 1999 presidential election - General Obasanjo and chief Olu - falae were Yorubas from the South-west.

Unfortunately for Obasanjo, he completely isolated the siblings of Abiola during his reign, even as he failed to make any attempt to immortalise or even passively recognise the ultimate sacrifice made by Abiola in enthroning democracy in Nigeria. It is therefore obvious, as Nigerians celebrate democracy day on June 12 2019, the consensus of opinion among many is that Obasanjo goofed for not recognizing June 12 during his reign, a mistake that is irredeemable.

If we want true change it's a northern leader that can bring it about like restructuring. I honestly believed PMB will bring a positive change to Nigeria in 2015 but no. The north too knows if Atiku is president restructuring will be a reality

Buhahahahahahahah! The Nigerian story is interesting. So Obasanjo had the chance and couldn't hold the bull by the horn. Shame. Goodluck Jonathan even joined the bidding of his master, OBJ. Buhari has been able to do what most psychophant politicians couldn't do. So after Twenty years of Democracy, one person (Buhari) has been able to acknowledge the success story of the first good attempt at enshrining democracy in 1993. The next four years will not be fun for the so-called political pillars of the country. What a shame, OBJ goofed indeed.
