We all know there is still discrimination of National Diploma holders in recruitment circles, despite government intervention in the matter. Several times, the National Assembly has called for the discrimination to be stopped. However, realities on the ground say different.

One of our clients, Ms Agboola, an HND Holder, was recently rejected at an interview, because she does not have a Degree as opposed to other candidates, despite being the only one with 5 years work experience in the same industry.

As an ND/HND holder working in a bank, you can earn up to N80,000 plus everyday tips from customers. Being a Diploma holder is not a dead-end and should never be treated as such.

After all, some foreigners that come to work in Nigeria and are given police escort and luxury cars are not even as educated & efficient as some of our Nigerian graduates (ND/HND/BSc).

As a Nigerian National Diploma holder, you stand a better chance of getting employment within a Nigerian Bank. This is because most banks are minimizing costs, after realizing that what it will cost them to pay a Degree holder, can be used to employ two or three Diploma holders.

As a National Diploma holder, you can work in the following capacity;

Teller

Customer Service Agent

Marketing Officer

To secure a job, bear in mind that most banks outsource the above-named roles to various recruiting agencies. The most popular of these are; Integrated Corporate Service Limited (ICSL), Vic Lawrence & Associates, Workforce Group, insert one more.

Please, note that in most cases, you will be required to take your credentials to the recruitment agencies’ offices in Abuja, Port Harcourt or Lagos to apply for these jobs, because sometimes they do not advertise directly for these positions.

Irrespective of what you studied in school, you are qualified to apply for any of these jobs as a Diploma holder, as long as you do not score less than Lower Credit.

After applying, the recruitment agency you submit your credentials to will conduct an aptitude test/interview, if you are successful, you will be sent to any of the banks they recruit for to be interviewed by the hiring manager of said bank.

If you end up getting the job, please note that you are not a full staff of the bank, rather you are a contract staff. While working, you can decide to upgrade to full staff status of the bank. Enrol for a Degree programme at any University within your reach.

Most banks now have in-house conversion opportunities for their contract staff to the position of Operations Officer/Full Staff. For you to achieve this, you have to maintain a clean sheet (you should not be found wanting in erroneous daily transactions, queries, cases of fraud, errors and insubordination).
