Why Solar Drying?

It has been estimated that 20-30% food grains, 30-50% vegetables, herbs and fruits are lost right on farm before they reach the markets and final consumers. Post harvest loss of grains, vegetables, fruits and herbs can be reduced by drying.

Solar drying remains a viable and cost effective method of drying and preserving food items for proper storage. It is more hygienic and efficient than traditional open air drying.
Solar drying utilizes natural convection, forced ventilation, solar radiation (sunlight) and greenhouse effect for produces drying. Moreover, charcoal/gas powered heating source can be installed to improve internal temperature.

Generally, Solar drying prevents spoilage, improves product hygiene, storability, availability, marketing and profitability. More importantly, produce nutrients, taste and colour are preserved.

Produces that can be solar dried are but not limited to; Moringa leaves, Chilli pepper, Okra, Ugu leaves, Melon, Thyme, Coriander, Stevia, Tea, Lemon grass, Curry, Basil, Garlic, Ginger, Tumeric, Herbs, Spices, Crayfish, Cassava chips, Plantain chips, Potato Chips, bitter leaves, Utazi, Melon, etc.
