Whether you believe it or not, majority of people are fighting against one addiction or another. Yours might be different from mine but all addictions are dangerous and harmful. According to Adams Feldman of MEDICALNEWSTODAY “addiction is a psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drugs, activity or substance, even though it is causing psychological and physical harm.”

Some addiction also involves an inability to stop partaking in activities such as gambling, masturbation, pornography, eating or working. In these circumstances, a person has behavioral addiction. When a person experiences addiction, they cannot control how they use a substance or partake in an activity and they become dependent on it to cope with daily life. Most people starts using a drug or first engage in an activity voluntarily. However, addiction can take over and reduce self control. However, addiction and misuse are different. Misuse refers to the incorrect, excessive or non therapeutic use of body and mind altering substances. However, not everybody that misuse a substance has addiction. Addiction is simply the long term inability to moderate or cease.

I suffered from addiction secretly for a very long time until I got tired and decided to do something about it. I want to share with you just four ways that I was able to overcome my stubborn addiction.

- I Starved It
When an habit becomes an addiction you will always feel the urge to engage. The urge is like a man knocking on the door of your apartment but it’s left to you to either open up or not. The truth is, if you refuse to grant him access whenever he knocks he will eventually get tired and walk away. He will keep coming but will eventually stop when you refuse to open up. So it is with addiction. Starve it by not engaging when the urge comes.

- I Got A Replacement
You can’t easily stop an addiction without having an alternative or replacement. For instance, if your addiction is masturbation or drugs, whenever you feel the urge to engage, get something else to remove your mind from the thought. Play an instrument, join a dance class, play sport just do something legal whenever you feel the urge.

- I Stopped Celebrating It
The funny truth is that things that are easily addicted to always seem like fun and enjoyment. You are celebrating it when you think it’s fun. Detest it, become angry with it,run away from it like Joseph fleeing from the grip of Potiphar’s wife. Some people have become addicted to sex cos that’s their own definition of fun in so doing, they h find themselves unable to stay a day without sex. Stop celebrating your addictions cos whatever you celebrate won’t want to let you go.

- Talk Against It
Some people would have gone back to their old lifestyle if they didn’t preach against it publicly. Talking, preaching, speaking against your addiction is an easy way to overcome it because only fools patronize what they discriminate against. Join a local group, join a talk group where people can talk about their addictions without being mocked.

- Bonus: Get Busy
