And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace."
(Exodus 14:13-14)

Episode One

Jacob woke up with a start, it was morning. The beginning of another day, and the dread of going to school gripped him with strong unyealding claws. It was the same feeling he woke up with every day ever since he changed schools. He missed Daddy. After Daddy and Mummy seperated, life had become different shades of difficult for the young Jacob. Him and Mummy no longer ate three times a day. He would skip breakfast and take food to school in his aluminum food flask and eat his next meal in the evening after his mother returns from the market. When she would first complain about how bad market was, then prepare a watery meal afterwards. But recently, Jacob only ate once in a day, because the senior boys who were the reason for the dread he now felt would come to their class in JSS 2 and specifically ask for his food flask and they would take it away and return in the evening towards closing hours with an empty food flask. Jacob always felt bitter but would not utter a word in protest. He had seen the punishment those senior boys metted on a junior boy who had once tried to fight back and take a stand, somehow he also knew that reporting to a teacher would not help much. It would only make things worse.
If only Daddy was here, he thought sadly as he made his way to the bathroom outside the building which three other families in the 'face me, I face you' compound shared with them. His father was so big and strong. He would have told him what he could do.
'Jacob Abraham!' One of the tallest boys barked as the gang walked into the unpainted classroom, full of boys in cream and brown uniform.
Jacob tried to hide behind the boy sitting before him and knew he had failed at it when the senior who had called his name matched to his seat and gave him a resounding slap. Jacob's ears stung with it's force.
'Are you not the one I'm called, or are you mad?'
Jacob was silent. He had eaten his food earlier so there would be nothing for them to take away. Mummy had been lamenting the night before on her failure to feed her own son. He had become all skin and bones, she said. Jacob was sorry but he could not tell her the truth. He couldn't put himself in more trouble and become an object of ridicule in the whole school if his mother should come fighting for him. Someone shoved him roughly and he remembered the situation at hand.
'Please leave me alone' The words were out before he could stop them. He could see the look of surprise on the faces staring at him, the senior boys and his classmates.
'What did you say?' His oppressor said with an intimidating tone of voice.
Jacob mustered courage and repeated his earlier statement, this time with more confidence. The senior boys roared with laughter. The tall boy dragged him up with his collar and out of the class. He did not struggle. The boy was much bigger and stronger than he. As he was dragged along, Jacob wondered where they were taking him to but he didn't ask. There was enough trouble for the day as it is.
