Students of Uriri High School have burnt one of their dormitories after being denied a chance to watch an AFCON match.

The students reportedly wanted to the Kenya vs Algeria match yesterday that was taking place in Cairo, Egypt. However, their quests were turned by school's administration hence spurring dissent.

According to the school principal, an alarm was raised by the school watchman that the dormitory had been set ablaze before the neighbouring community and students themselves came in to contain the situation.

Property of unknown value was destroyed during the inferno.

“No casualties have been reported, we have launched an investigation into the incident and soon we will know what transpired,” a senior police officer told journalists.

In June 2016, learning at Itierio Boys High School in Kisii was paralysed after students burnt down eight dormitories in protest against new ‘tough’ rules set by the school administration. Among the tough rules was the cancellation of a football watching routine the students were used to during weekends. The students who were on rampage also left their classes and school dining hall completely vandalised.

The students also went ahead to raid the principal’s office, school canteen as well as a laboratory at a neighbouring school where they left a trail of destruction.

Mid last year, police arrested six students in the wake of a wave of unrest in schools in Nyanza region.

Ministry of Education blamed anxiety over exams, resistance to the transfer of headteachers, copy-cat effect, and indiscipline on the unrest rocking schools.

Five of those arrested after the burning of two dormitories at Chulaimbo Secondary School were charged with arson.
