All Students can read exceptionally if the right strategies are used. However, most traditional reading practices can’t support diverse learning abilities. But there are newer comprehension strategies that can work for all kids helping them become self-regulated, active thinkers while they read. These comprehension strategies include:

Monitor comprehension
Students who monitor their comprehension know what they read, when they understand and areas they don’t understand. Help your students learn how to identify areas they do understand and then areas they don’t understand, so it becomes easier to fix the problem areas.

Using metacognition
Help kids become aware of what they are “thinking about thinking.” Good readers apply metacognitive techniques to help them gain higher reading control. Before reading, help them by explaining the purpose of reading that text. Give them little insights on the comprehension. During the reading, help them monitor their understanding and adjust their reading speed to fit the comprehensions’ difficulty.

Use graphic organizers
Graphic illustrations also help students better grasp the comprehension. These organizers include charts, frames, graphs, Venn diagrams, storyboards, maps, and clusters. They can help students learn the differences between non-fiction and fiction while reading. They can help students critically analyze and display relationships in a text. They can also help them write summaries of the text in an organized manner.

Use Questions
When students are actively schooled with practice questions, they challenge their memories to put together answers from what they have learned so far. Questions can help students concentrate on what they are meant to learn, gain a sense of purpose for reading, and actively think as they read. Students should be asked questions that things as they appear in text and facts that appear directly in one place. They should also be asked questions based on previous knowledge and self-reflection.

Understanding the structure of the story
Teach students to identify different parts of comprehension and what kinds of categories make up a story. This includes settings, events, characters, problems, and resolutions. In many events, students can be thought to recognize the story structure with Venn diagrams or storyboards. When students learn more about the structure of a story, it can enhance their comprehension.

Summarizing
Summarizing can also help enhance reading strength in students because it helps them determine what’s essential in the text. It can also help them generate main ideas, eliminate unnecessary information, remember what was read, and connect central ideas.

Generating questions
Apart from asking questions, students should be encouraged to create questions about the comprehension text. These questions require combining questions from different parts of the text and can help them grasp the most crucial information in the text.

By using efficient reading strategies, teachers can help students understand comprehension and help them read well outside the prescribed texts. Skilled readers usually use these strategies to understand what they are reading. So, by helping struggling students with an expert blend of these strategies, they can become avid readers in only a little while.
