On the flip side, it is actually very easy.

Easy on the gas, allow transmission doesn't it's work, while you count the gear change numbers. At 60km/h, gear 4 should have been engaged.

PARTIALLY DISAGREE, WHILE ENGINE BREAKING SPEED IS ENCOURAGED FOR BETTER ECONOMY, ON THE HIGHWAY THE SWEET SPOT IS 90KM/HR CONSTANT SPEED....ABOUT 30% BETTER FUEL SAVINGS....READ UP HYPERMILLING

autologic:
The best way to save fuel is driving making use of deceleration mode of driving cos at deceleration ,ecu commands injector to cut supply of fuel .

Hypermiling is a collection of driving techniques aimed at improving a car's fuel efficiency by reducing the demands placed on the engine. It's possible to improve fuel economy by 37 percent just by changing the way you drive, so hypermiling is gaining interest in light of high fuel costs. While some hypermiling methods are controversial and potentially dangerous, this article will focus on safer techniques that can still save you gas and money.

The strategies for hypermiling are different depending on whether you're driving a gas powered car versus a hybrid versus a plug-in hybrid or purely electric powered vehicle. Some of the suggestions below may not apply depending on the type of vehicle you're driving.

Drive as if you don't have brakes — coast as much as possible. When you're driving plan a path that doesn't require braking followed by a sudden start. Careful coasting can reduce your gas usage so much that acceleration won't even cause a hiccup in your cruising mpg.

On newer cars if the car is in gear and your foot is off the accelerator, the injectors shut off completely, creating essentially "free" mileage — your car's going but you're not using gas beyond a small amount for engine braking, or the engine's resistance to your costing.
Don't coast by disengaging the clutch and/or putting the car in neutral. This will cause the engine to go into idle which uses up more gas than simply leaving the car in gear and letting it coast along with minimal engine input.

You are not saving gas if you allow auto tranny get to gear 4 how much less maintain a relatively low rev on so high a gear...With a manual, you can go very quick to gear 4 and maintain the power at low rev just above engine stall range..

You are actually saving more as long as engine rpm don't go beyond 2000 rpm.

That is why manual is so good for this kind of exercise, you control the rev just below 2000 and above engine stall whilst manually upshifting as quickly as possible. With Auto somehow at some point along the revs and upshifting to gear 4, the auto tranny computer will surpass that 2000 RPMs maybe up to 2500....it will waste valuable gas time during the whole procedure thus wasting gas.

Though truly the manual is a joy to drive, however your assertion only holds true for old auto transmissions. Newer transmissions have been created with the basic focus on saving fuel and giving more power. They are smarter and more effecient on transmitting engine power to the wheels. How did they achieve this?
Give the tranny its own control module, increase number of gears for the transmission, design the gears in the most effecient way possible, use specially formulated ATF that will allow you achieve best results and many other variables.

Some transmissions are created to shift at lower rev limits (economy) while some at higher rev limits (sports). In the end it all depends on manufacturer design.

I agree totally with you on this. Coasting with the gear engaged saves both fuel and brake components from engine braking.

You can as well do a pseudo style shift with an auto tyranny by taking your foot off the gas pedal for the gear to up shift before stepping on the gear again just to maintain the low rpm change.

Works for me. Especially when shifting to overdrive.

Yeah, that is "some" but we are talking about the average auto tranny out there in the market against the average manual tranny as far as getting the best mileage on a low fuel rating is concerned..

Ok. So what model year range would we call the average in Nigeria?
For me? I say 2008 - 2010. And thats what i base my statement on.

Entry level autos from the early 2000s up till 2006 should be the average auto tranny in the market.Anybody driving above that is a big boy in our Nigeria today. And of course, is less likely to be in a situation of "low on fuel. Do you drive fast or slow".
