Ayoola Ajayi: Putting it straight - I am disappointed but not surprised.

I met Ayo (as he was called) in 2009 in Utah. I was working at xx-xx-xx while he was a student of computer studies and had just arrived from Nigeria. We became close and I introduced him to my young family. He was a regular visitor to my home and was very respectful as many Yorubas are. Personally, he was a nice guy, or so I thought. During one of our many discussions, he told me his mother is the pillar of his life and that she was involved in the politics of his home state of Osun. He did not talk much about his father, but from our discussion I could sense his parents were not in the best of terms.

Ayo was often broke and did odd jobs to keep life together. He was also off and on at the university and had several time gaps in his educational pursuit. But he was versatile and techy, and could fix cell phones and computers. He was also into body building and showed me some moves to lose weight. He got into many Caucasian (‘’white’’) girls and was a Mormon (Latter Day Saints) at some point. He joined Mormonism in order to be able to meet a girl to help him regularize his stay in the US. He pretended to be a good Christian, but I could see through him, being a Nigerian myself. Long story short, he used girls as he pleased, ostensibly to help keep his stay in America legal. But he could have stuck to one girl and still achieved the same goal. I left the area in 2014 and we were in touch via Social Media (SM) for a while until we lost touch. Meanwhile, he informed me via SM when we kept in touch that he joined the US military as an IT Specialist -he was discharged sometime after (I do not know why though). He also did not eventually receive a degree, as he did not complete his university study. He got married to one of his numerous girls but divorced sometime after. I guess he achieved his dream of becoming an American via marriage - another used and dumped. Still, he was good enough to be working at some tech job and took a mortgage on a home, until he was arrested last Friday.

Prior to his recent travail, Ayo had a few brushes with the law. He had a couple mild traffic issues back then. Also, in 2014 he was accused of sexual misconduct, but the alleged victim declined to pursue the case. So, it was dropped and he had no criminal record on him, until he was arrested this June and charged for kidnapping a girl, murdering her, desecrating her body, and obstructing justice.

These are serious charges, and he could be in for the death penalty or at the least, life in prison. Put mildly, Ayo may never see the outside of the prison walls again, if found guilty. He most likely will be found guilty. Forensic and witness evidences are stacked against him.

Although Ayo lived a chequered life, I was still shocked he could go the extent of doing what he is being accused of. But I am not surprised, as he was all over the place, which often does not end well.

Ayo, you had the full realization of the American dream starring you in the face. And you blew it away into smithereens. Why did you do it?

Nigerians abroad must be good ambassadors at all times. Ayo is a proper Nigerian; he came to America as an adult. Good that so far his Nigerian-ness has been largely mute. But that will certainly come into play after the investigation and during the court trial

I know it's been a long time, but I am curious to know what you think of him, based on what you knew about him back then.

People change you know...ayoola as we do call him then used to be a funny teenager that treats everything with levity he never takes anything serious I remember an incident in class(jss3) when we were preparing for junior waec so all jss3 students were put together in a single hall. Ayoola was hungry one particular day like that and it wasn't yet time for break he sneaked out of class and went to the kitchen to get two wraps of fufu.came back to class and was eating the food with the aroma of the stew that was coming from the kitchen in the front of over 300 students everybody busted into laughter I even personally thought he would pursue a career in the entertainment industry cos he was so so funny until recently when I stumbled on an old school mate that told me Ayo has moved to the United States way back as 08/09(got me thinking in my mind if I could have that opportunity) he then told me he's in the United States Army.....myself and that same old school mate still discussed him recently I was even searching for his profile on facebook sometimes I go through the friends list of people that we attended the same school together that time....this is a very sad news...it shouldn't have been him

Indeed, people change. Sad for what he did to the poor victim (imagine killing and burning a human being); and also sad for his folks back home in Nigeria.

Not officially found guilty yet. But the charges against him are serious and it appears that there is enough forensic, cell phone, and human witness evidences to nail him. He should be in court by Monday, or sometime later this week.
