Niger State government has said the Northern states have the potentials to accommodate the federal government’s Ruga settlement plan.

Ruga settlements are conceived by the federal government to address the incessant clashes between farmers and herders in the country.

In an interactive session with newsmen on Monday in Minna, the Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG), Ahmed Matane, said: “the North had the largest land mass in the country with greater portion largely untapped.”

He added that Northern state governors, in collaboration with the federal government, should put the land into judicious use through the Ruga settlement initiative.

He said the initiative could look at the possibility of reactivating the structures already put in place by the defunct Northern Region government through the many grazing reserves that abound in the North.




According to him, most of the reserves had been gazetted with already developed structures but abandoned.

Matane added that they should be rehabilitated and upgraded for use, pointing out that the ongoing discontents over the proposed settlement were needless.

He said, “Bringing the nomads together would end the conflict thrown up by the struggle for space. The Ruga initiative would lead to development and enhancement of livestock value chain.”




“Livestock development is a big business. The value chain is enormous and will attract huge foreign exchange for the country. Leather alone is a multimillion naira business and in the ongoing diversification drive of the federal government from oil to agriculture; livestock subsector could be the key flagship,” he explained.

The SSG said Niger State had already taken the lead through the rehabilitation of the 45, 000 hectares Bobi Grazing Reserve in Mariga local government area.

According to him, the present administration, under the leadership of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, would expedite action towards promoting pasture development for Pastoralists at the Grazing Reserve.

He explained that the settlement of Pastoralists at the Grazing Reserve would turn nomadic Pastoralists into mixed Farmers who will take up crop farming to supplement livestock farming.

I hope the rejection of this Ruga has shown Buhari how much Nigerians dont trust him aswell as how sharply he has divided Nigeria along ethnic lines. It was never this open in the past.

While he creates the Ruga in the North, with the national common wealth of the whole nation, states that have rejected it should be given grants aswell to enable them solve conflicts in areas that have affected them like he is trying to solve that of the affected North.

That way, which ever group dares to draw the attention of the govt by destruction of their properties/amenities would always take note, others get likewise equal, to suit their various needs and grievances.

Yes, the North can as the land area of the entire 5 states in the South East is just only about 40% of Niger state alone as Anambra state and Imo state put together is not even up to the size of Borgu local government area in Niger state.

Even the North should not allow Ruga settlements. The Jos I knew in the early 90s / early millennia used to be probably one of the most peaceful places on earth, but look at what fulani herdsmen militias have done to the place, and they don't have Ruga yet. Same thing, the Benue I use to hear of was about promiscuity, not insecurity, but look at what Fulani herdsmen militias turned it into today, and they don't even have Ruga settlements yet. Imagine what will now happen when Ruga settlements are in place. These Ruga thing will be nothing but sleep cells for terrorists that will later be used for violence and war against the original settlers. I'm not a political person, just a concerned citizen that can see beyond his nose. Any Northern state that allows Ruga is only laying the foundation for ISIS-backed terrorists to turn the North into another Caliphate, and the Christians there better speak out now, because their plan is to wipe out all Christians and Churches in the North, while retaining Mosques and Muslims in the South. Look at what happened and is still happening in the middle east, from Iraq to Syria to Yemen to Lebanon,they have wiped out entire Christian populations, taken over their lands, destroyed their Churches, captured people like the Yazidis etc, killing their men and turned their wives and children to sex slaves that they sell in their black markets, all in a bid to end Christianity in the Middle East. Ruga settlements may look innocent now, but the truth is giving them Ruga in 11 states, means they are giving the Fulanis 11 states out of 36 states in Nigeria, because only a matter of few years, the Fulani militias will take over every state they settle in with violence and terrorism. They are different from Hausas, hausas are more peaceful, Fulanis are like Arabs, they have a war mentality, the only reason the Hausas were able to coexist with them peacefully and stylishly was because the Hausas yielded to them and intermarried with them, so as to prevent mass murders and systematic takeover of their lands.
