The Ondo State Police Command, on Monday, confirmed the release of a commercial driver, Mr Felix Akinde, by his abductors.

Akinde, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, was kidnapped last week by unknown gunmen in Ita-Ogbolu on the Akure-Ado Ekiti Road, headquarters of the Akure North Local Government Area of the state, while travelling to Akure from Ekiti State to pick passengers.

The hoodlums demanded N5m ransom for his release but the amount was later reduced to N2m after negotiation.

It was gathered that the victim was set free on Saturday after an undisclosed amount was paid to his abductors as ransom.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph, confirmed the development but said the command was not aware that any ransom was paid.

He added that the command had not got the details of how the victim was set free as of the time of speaking to our correspondent.

Joseph stated, “I can confirm that the victim has been released, but we don’t have the details of his release, because after he was set free, he called to inform us.

“We asked him to come to the command headquarters to give us the details but he said he wanted to go and meet his boss first, and since then, he has not shown up.”

On the ransom paid, the PPRO said, “We have not seen him to know the details; we cannot say anything on whether ransom was paid or not. All I can say is that he has been released.”
