CAF have revealed their AFCON Group Stage Best XI and included four Egyptians along the way. However, there was no room for Trezeguet or Zimbabwe MOTM Mahmoud Alaa.

CAF have decided to choose the Liverpool duo, Salah and Mane, as each has carried their own teams past the group stages. But by choosing Mane, there was no room for Egypt’s Trezeguet whose amazing performances have attracted interest from Premier League clubs: Watford, Everton, and Aston Villa.

Understandably, CAF have not included a single Egyptian in their three-player midfield, which consists of the Algerian duo Ismail Bennacer and Ryad Mehrez, and Malagasy international Anicet Abel as Madagascar have impressed by topping their group and beating Nigeria.

The defence is where Egypt shined the most, with half of the defenders being Egyptian. The full-backs in the main squad were Ahmed Elmohamady, who was named Man of the Match in Egypt’s game against Uganda. While the centre backs included were Egypt’s Hegazi and Cameroon’s Yaya Banana.

Of course, CAF have chosen Mohamed El-Shenawy as the main goalkeeper in the AFCON Group Stage Best XI. The 30-year-old produced a number of fine saves to help Egypt beat Uganda 2-0 and top group A.

However, none of the substitutes were Egyptian.

After topping their group, Egypt will be playing South Africa in the 2019 African Cup of Nations in the Round of 16 on Saturday.
