Why haven't security men clashed with muslims that pray on major roads?

Every Friday in major northern Nigeria cities and towns, muslims gather in any mosque located at the centre of the town no matter how small the mosques is and do their jumat prayer there. They do it obstructing roads around the mosques and I find it baffling that our security agent have hardly clashed with them the way they clashed with Shi'ite muslims.

What is the secret behind this highly improbable pattern?

Good question!!!

They have clashed with Al Zak Zaki's Shia Muslims several times.

They have clashed with IPOB several times.

They have clashed with Revolution Now protesters.

All these groups were all minding their business but they have never clashed with those that constitute nuisance by blocking major roads on Fridays under whatever guise.

Sometimes u just wake up to see bullshit on Nairaland. People who know nothing about Islam are displaying their stupidity because of their hatred for the gov't. Roadblock is common in Nigeria I stay in Kaduna and I can tell u that there are churches that usually block roads during service for security reasons. On the other hand the Muslim be it torikat qadiriya etc (but the ignorant OP tagged as Sunnis ) block road because they don't have enough room for their congregation. And it is usually not more than 30min. This people after prayer don't have beef with anybody so why should police or Army clash with them.

Even when they aren't in power, they block major highways for Juma'at Prayers on Fridays especially in Abuja and other Northern Cities.

helinues:

Cos they are the majority in Nigeria Muslims.. Almost 75% if I am not mistaken.

And also they are the one in power... No long story about that

Most Yoruba musims nominally belong to Sunni Islam, though the Ahamdiyyah Sect also have appreciable presence.

However, you need to understand that most Yoruba Muslims (or even Yoruba Christians) are not fanatical about imported religions.

This 30 minutes excuse - that Sunnis only block roads every Friday for 30 minutes only is false.

They pray on major roads by spreading their mats. They park their cars on the roads and block others from passing. The sermon and the Friday prayer last for 30 minutes. But they normally start trooping in to the mosque and obstructing others before the sermon and prayer commence; that means they would block roads for more than an hour. They also take time before they disperse and clear traffic after the Friday prayer concludes. But even if it is for 5 minutes is that excusable? That still doesnt answer the OP's enquiry. @Seun

Then, the Shii'tes would say that they only hold their processions twice in an entire year. On Ashura and on Quds Days. There are at least 52 Fridays in any given year. If Shiites do their processions not more than 3 times in an entire year, that doesnt seem like much. The Shi'ites themselves would argue that they leave space for others to pass and they wont block the entire road. But if Sunnis block roads around the country every Friday for 60 minutes in a year, that is 60 minutes multipled by 52 (weeks). That is 3,120 minutes. If you divide that by 60 minutes, it is 52 hours. So yearly, Sunnis block roads for 52 hours to perform their Friday prayers across Nigeria. That is over 2 days. Now, compare that to a maximum or 2 or 3 days Shiites block roads, if at all (and their processions dont last for more than some hours in any of the two occasions within the year). No much difference, but we see the Sunnis actually block roads across the country more than the Shiites do.

Nigeria's issue with its Shiite population is not road blocking. It is far more than that. It is the doctrinal differences with the majority Sunni. When the Nigerian president is Christian, Shiites breath and they are not persecuted as at when the Nigerian president is Sunni Muslim. And among the Sunnis in Nigeria, the Saudi sponsored extremist Wahhabi/Salafist movement has made inroads and invested money in propagating extremist teachings among Nigerian Sunni Muslims. @Seun . And the Wahhabis/Salafists are the ones who regard Shia AKA Shi'ite Muslims as heretics, apostates or unbelievers, and deserve to be killed, just as they see and regard Christians
as polyethists who should be killed too.

Also, foreign influence contribute to the problem. Shi'ites, particularly the ones with close relations with Iran, the major Shia country in the world, are hated or demonized because they always denounce Saudi Arabia and Israel. And the security agencies in Nigeria have people in them who have sympathies for and relations with other nations, especially Saudi Arabia and Israel. So it is not surprising for clashes with the minority Nigerian Shia to take place.

In Jonathan's time, a clash between the an army vehicle and the Shiites took place in Kaduna. The excuse was obstruction of traffic. It is very surprising that everytime and everywhere the Shiites are doing their procession, once or twice a year, there is an army patrol vehicle that is plying that same route. And the Shiites now have mistrust for the army in particular. In that incident in 2014, there is no indication Jonathan ordered any shooting or was aware of the clash before hand. Apparently the decision to confront the Shiites on that day in 2014 was taken locally in Kaduna. 34 Shiites were killed including 3 of Zakzaky's sons. Jonathan then called Zakzaky on phone and apologized. While El Rifai, who was then in opposition was cheering for the Shiites and he even paid a condolence visit to Zakzaky, which more or less was a campaign visit. The same El Rufai that is persecuting the Shiites today. The Saudi influence, which is very anti Shia shouldn't be underestimated in Nigeria, whether among religious groups or even in govt quarters.

The question is for how long would Nigerians, who happen to be Shiites be killed extra judicially and brutally on the roads for practicing their faith? This has to stop. Persecution of any religion is not acceptable and will only harden and embolden the adherents and create more problems for all of us. Harmony and tolerance are very much needed. And the bad news is that the Shiites are not going to cease from existing in Nigeria. And they will continue to grow for a simple reason, which if you study their beliefs you would know. The Shiites believe in almost all or everything that the Sunnis believe in. But the Shiites have more beliefs that the Sunnis reject. So the Shiites have extra market to sell to the ordinary Sunni person and attract him over. The main reason why more Sunnis become Shiites and hardly any Shiite would become a Sunni. There is almost nothing, in terms of fundamental doctrines, the Sunni believes in that the Shiite doesnt. But there are things the Shiites hold that Sunnis reject. So once the Shiite can justify those things to the Sunni and is able to convince a Sunni, the convertion takes place. So there must be a way to coexist and tolerate.

which kind stupid question be this from OP.

people are forced to react when you continually persist to become nuisance in the society.
you should have asked why shia muslims were killed in kaduna after the military begged them to leave the road.
we both know that what is going on in lagos if protesters should grab hold of any security agencies, na straight death.

forget all this amnesty when una dey yell for.
they ain't stupid either, you killed policemen in the name of protest and even though we know thugs did the deed, protesters should have distance from it and not cheer the act..

Seems you don't know the difference between vehicular traffic overwhelming a road in rush hour and private individuals bringing their belief to the public to block roads deliberately and periodically every Friday.

You must be one of the trans-generational moróns fighting for that ancient child molester's cause. Nonsense.

Stop being selective and myopic in your criticism; though I do not subscribe to blocking of roads by any persons; however, there is a big difference and therefore no comparison between those who temporarily block the road to pray peacefully against those that block it to cause criminal unrest while threaten the govt in power.

Why for example didn't you make the same comparison with Shiite Muslim protesters who were similarly demonstrating and being shot dead at sight by the military - where was your hypocritic voice then?
