1. Grab a calculator. (you won't be able to do this one in your head) 2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area code) 3. Multiply by 80 4. Add 1 5. Multiply by 250 6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number 7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again. 8. Subtract 250 9. Divide number by 2 Do you recognize the answer? I am too SMART |

@ mamajama, i wont mind, expansiate more on that. You know it's quite trickier than that of computer dependency. |

MAMAJAMA: Smart indeed. You are not so much solving a mathematical problem as you are doing abracadabra "the more they look, the less they see"! I am in a bubble-bursting mood today, sorry. Your trick is nothing more than the TENS, HUNDREDS and THOUSANDS rule taught in arithmetics. Put it this way. . . if I add a few zeros to the back of any number and add another to it, the result would be the same as lining up all the digits composing the two numbers linearly, provided I add enough zeros. For example, if I make 1 => 10000 and add two thousand, three hundred and forty-five to it, I get. . . you guessed right, 12345! What genius! How do I make 1 = 10000? Multiply it by 10,000. To make 1 => 10000, 1 x 10,000 = 10000. Supposing that, instead of 1, we use a number, say, the first three digits of my phone number (excluding the dialling code), which happen to be 123. 123 x 10000 = 123,0000. Right? Hmmm. . . OK. So I add a four-digit number to it, say, the last four digits of my phone number, which just happen to be 4567. 123,0000 + 4567 = 1234567. Wow! What happens if I do this with 1,000,000 instead of 10,000? You got it right - the same principle holds. I simply need to know how many digits are in your phone number. Unlike the original post, I can modify this to include even your local code. Simply genius, ain't I! Your next question is probably, "how does 10,000 come into this matter"? Hold on a while, and I will show you. Bear with me, while I go a bit technical now. Let us represent the first three digits of my phone number by x, and the last four digits by y (it does not matter what the values are, this just helps us to ignore them). 2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area code) = x 3. Multiply by 80 = 80x 4. Add 1 = 80x + 1 5. Multiply by 250 = 250 (80x + 1) 6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number = [250(80x + 1)] + y 7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again = [250(80x + 1)] + y + y = [250(80x + 1)] + 2y. Expanding the brackets, [250(80x + 1)] + 2y = [250(80x) + 250] + 2y = 250(80x) + 250 + 2y 8. Subtract 250 = [250(80x) + 250 + 2y] - 250 = 250(80x) + 2y 9. Divide number by 2 = Divide the terms on both sides of the "+" sign by 2 = 250(80x)/2 + 2y/2; Dividing through by 2, 250(80x)/2 + 2y/2 = 250(40x) + y!!! By now, you probably already see the connection. 250 x 40x + y = 10,000 x the first three digits of my phone number + the last four digits. Therefore, the labyrithine arithmetic was simply to derive the number 10,000. LOL! Questions, anyone? |

I guess i'm expected to arrive at my phone # after doing this maths but 2 digits are missing as I only got the first 3 and the last 4. And yes, it works for foreign #s as well. . . just that I didn't get my phone # fully, just part of it! |
