Local delicacy turned health hazard

Better look well when you’re whacking down your favourite soup because you might be enjoying a soup filled with leather ponmo!!

This is the trending food scam of the moment as the Lagos State Government located and confiscated another truckload of contaminated ponmo a few days ago. Earlier this year about 30 ton was also discovered and seized, but the culprits themselves have not been found.

This contaminated cowhide going about town is actually laced with all kinds of chemicals to keep it preserved for leather use, to make things like our bags and shoes. However, some ponmo criminals are repurposing these and getting them sold in markets.

Look twice at what’s in your soup these days, because you might as well be putting your shoe in your mouth.
