Unknown Facts About Huawei OS by MayorVal: 1:01am On Jul 11, 2019
Hongmeng OS alternatively called Ark OS, is Huawei’s replacement to Android. Hongmeng OS is Huawei’s first ever self-developed operating system.

You’ve probably heard of the Huawei ban as Huawei has been ban from working with US companies such as Google and Microsoft due to security concerns. As a result, Huawei was banned from using Android and Google Play Services on its smartphones.

This drove a big question : How on earth can Huawei compete in the smartphone market without working with Google the company that owns android?
Back in March, Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu said,

"We have Plan B ready in case Huawei smartphones and computers can’t use Android or Windows OS following the tensions between Huawei and the US Government."

So here 4 facts you probably didn’t know about the Hongmeng OS:

1. It has been in active development since 2012
In 2012, top executives in Huawei decieded to build an alternative OS. This was because at that time the company was growing rapidly, and they couldn’t allow their entire fate rest entirely on Android’s shoulders. This led to the development of the Hongmeng OS in 2012 in Shenzhen, southeastern China. Within months, a specialized zone was created inside the company to work on this project internally known as Ark OS. Completely top secret at that time.

2. Hongmeng OS is Open Source
This means that Huawei has granted permission to anyone to use the Hongmeng OS source code, and design its content. This OS, just like Android will be available for use by smartphone companies like Oneplus, Xiaomi, Oppo and the rest of them. As a matter of fact, Chinese vendors Oppo and Vivo have sent teams who are currently testing new Google alternative.

3. It could be 60% Faster than Android
There are reports which have indicated that the Huawei’s OS is performing 60% faster than the now old Google Android System. The Global Times stated that “Huawei is reportedly intensively testing its proprietary operating system (OS) with internet giants and domestic smartphone vendors, and the new system will be launched in the next few months.

Also, Global Times reports that,” Smartphone vendors such as OPPO and VIVO have also sent teams to test the new system, which was shown as being 60 percent faster than the Android system.”
It should be noted however, that the Huawei executive stressed that the company will only launch its operating system, Hongmeng OS if it will receive a permanent ban from using Google or Microsoft products.

4. Huawei’s OS Does Not Support Google Services
The Hongmeng OS is not based on android but can run android apps. Basically, it is android without Google services. So, no Google Play store, no Google maps, and no Gmail, plus no security updates from Google or Google Play Protect. This sounds pretty unappealing, but if any company can work around this, its Huawei. For example, Aptoide is an alternative android app store with over 800,000 apps. If something like that can exist, then Huawei can sustain one too.

Huawei already have a store called App Gallery, and they have started emailing developers to move their apps into it. Without a second thought, a lot of them will move their apps. Because Huawei sells millions of phones and developers don’t want to miss in that market. Besides, because Hongmeng OS can run android applications, nothing needs to be recoded, they just literally need to get their applications and upload into Huawei’s store.

In conclusion, Google has confirmed that any Huawei device currently in use will still have access to Google Play which means critical security patches and updates to keep coming, at least for now.
