Air Pollution : Ondo To Provide Mitigating Measures Through Renewable Energy, Green Technologies, Others, Says Akeredolu

Ondo State governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has said his administration is determined to provide mitigating measures through the use of renewable energy and green technologies among others to reduce the level of air pollution in the state.

Governor Akeredolu said the effect of air pollution is not only hazardous to the environment, but also detrimental to humans health.

Governor Akeredolu, who spoke at the World Environment Day (WED) on Wednesday, said the state joins other countries in the world to celebrate the World Environment Day (WED) in order to reawaken and enjoin citizens to refrain from acts, such as bush burning, deforestation, carbon emission, gas flaring, indiscriminate waste disposal, poaching and other hazardous acts.

The Governor said the state couldn't observe the World Environment Day on June 6 as the day was declared a public holiday by the Federal Government to celebrate the Ramadan with Muslim faithful.

While warning the people to desist from bush burning, Arakunrin Akeredolu said legislation is currently in place to prevent bush burning and deforestation in the state.

The Governor said the state Government has received 1,000 consignment of clean stoves for distribution to women in the rural areas of the state to reduce air pollution.

According to the Governor, the fallout of last year celebration was manifested in some activities which were done in commemoration of the event.

The activities as highlighted by the Governor include: Five Drop - off boxes plastic waste facilities which were placed in strategic locations in Akure to encourage recycling of plastic bottles and at Imafon, in Akure North, an organisation, Durian, is constructing a unique community Toilet with a Biogas production section and also building a training hall with recycled plastic bottles.
