Unfortunately you got it all twisted. It's not about population but about productivity. Switzerland population is far lesser than Nigeria with higher population. Hope you now get what I am saying.

What type of productivity are you talking about? Are you suggesting that other zones are more productive than SE? That would be a big fat lie. IGR is directly linked to population. You cannot levy on one person two person's taxes - it's always one man one tax. Therefore, SE will always be lower in IGR, given its lower population. Hey don't forget that SE is not the parasite in chief in Nigeria. They receive the lowest monthly allocation from the federal government based on lowest population. In life you cannot eat your cake and have it. You cannot give SE lowest allocation based on population and expect higher IGR based on same population. Does it make any sense to you now?

The entire GDP of Switzerland ($678.89 billion) is greater than that of Nigeria ($375.77 billion); so don't even go there. Nigeria is how many times bigger than Switzerland in population?

I read the silly comments about SE's IGR with amusement; Nigerians are on average too unintelligent to evaluate factors that have an impact on IGR or to evaluate anything at all. In the absence of data relating to political and economic factors, demographics etc for each region and assuming a uniform distribution of tax eligible jobs and businesses, doing the basic math based on population would reveal that SE generated the 3rd highest revenue per person after SS and SW or 2nd highest after SS if Lagos was excluded from the SW's computation.

NC

The Per Capita of the South East is the second highest , if you exclude Lagos from South west and Abuja from North Central .

For Lagos if you are able to break down Lagos IGR base on the State of Origin of the payers then the real big picture will be more visible

1) Successful Business men like Coscharis run their Business largely on economic principles and not Tribalism. They site their Businesses in areas with the greatest rewards on investments.

2) If the so-called 100,000 business men should move their Businesses to Aba, Lokoja, Akure, Nsukka, Agbor, Nnewi, Funtua, Aguleri, Sokoto, Aboh or Okigwe, they will record massive losses.

3) The profits made by Coscharis ,out of which they are able to pay tax comes from Other Nigerians with substantial economic power (largely residing in Lagos) that buy their products.

4) Igbos have been migrating to Lagos for economic reasons since the Colonial era.
There are Millions of Igbos in Ibadan, Benin,Oshogbo, Ilorin , Kano, Calabar, Warri, Kaduna, Jos, Yola and even in War torn Borno doing one form of business or the other.
Is this also due to Nigeria's lopsided federalism?

Again in a country where one provides water, electricity, good roads, good education, good health facilities etc. for yourself, whats the point of worrying yourself about big IGR that will be looted by politicians? These people in nairaland mumu.

Lagos as the commercial capital bah?

I remember when Fashola was the governor of Lagos state, Lagos state with all the commercial capital excuse you are talking about used to borrow nearly half of their budget from banks while states like Akwa Ibom budgets even larger budgets than Lagos/Fashola, but Akwa Ibom still achieved less than Lagos state across the board.

It is not always about money, it's always about leadership and talented people making the right decisions.

Commercial capital doesn't alter the fact that Lagos is part of the SW, ruled and governed by the people of the SW with their talent and ingenuity and the same talent and ingenuity that the same people of the SW are massively replicating in Ogun state.

Funny when Lagos was generating measly N500 million per month, it wasn't a commercial capital and Tinubu was corrupt and greedy, but his ingenuity and smarts turned N500 million per month into well over N34 billion per month. So, what was responsible for that? Brains, smarts, talent, and ingenuity or just commercial capital.

Lagos is excelling because of good leadership and sensible leaders, not commercial anything. You can have all the money and opportunities in the world and still achieve nothing.

Lagos is thriving and is the commercial capital that every Nigerian seek for survival is available today because their leaders in Lagos.

Lagos is part of the SW, commercial capital or not.

You people need to stop discounting and using Lagos as a rallying cry to justify and rationalize incompetence and poor performance in other places.

Stats from here based on Census 2006
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nigerian_states_by_population
The wikipedia page references a document from population.gov.ng

The SE is actually the least populated region in Nigeria. I've seen many SW commenters on here claim that there are more Igbos outside of the SE than there are in the SE so it would follow that Igbos contribute more to the IGR of other regions than to that of the SE; that's besides the point however.
IGR comes from income, sales, taxes, fines etc. Workforce, employment opportunities, natural resources, industries contribute to these sources of revenue.
SE is pulling its weight despite being disadvantaged in all (arguably) of the indices above.

Ogun generating more revenue than the SE is highly doubtful given that the report you based your comparison on shows SW IGR to be 877.8 billion with Lagos generating 501.2 billion of that amount. Unless you are saying Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Oyo states generated a combined total less than 35 billion, there's no way Ogun generated more than 340.1 billion which is the revenue allegedly generated by the SE in the post quoted below.

sarrki:
The total revenue received by the Lagos state government in 2018 was higher than what was received by the entire south-east region.

The south-east region consists of five states namely: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo.

Lagos generated total revenue of N501.2 billion while the entire south-east region generated N340.1 billion.

The state’s 2018 revenue was also higher than that of the northeast and north-central, which was N351.5 billion and N378.7 billion respectively.

This is contained in the Quarterly Review document of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

The revenue of states was calculated as the sum of the internally generated revenue (IGR) and allocations from the federation accounts allocation committee (FAAC).

The total IGR generated by states in 2018 was N1.103 trillion while the total FAAC allocations were N2.849 trillion.

Lagos state had the highest total revenue of N501.2 billion while Osun had the lowest at N33.2 billion.

“This implies that the total revenue of Lagos State was 13.9% of the combined total revenue of all states. Also, if the states with the highest and lowest revenues are compared, the revenue of Lagos State was 15 times or 1,518% of the revenue of Osun State,” the report read.

“The total revenue of Lagos State (N501.2 billion) exceeded total revenue of each of three zones: North Central (N378.7 billion), North East (N351.5 billion), and South East (N340.1 billion).

“While the total revenue received by Lagos State is higher than the total revenue of each of these zones, the total revenue of the South-South is higher than the combined total revenue of all three zones. The total revenue received by Lagos State is greater than the combined total revenues received by nine states (N449.49 billion) – Osun, Ekiti, Zamfara, Ebonyi, Gombe, Taraba, Cross River, Nasarawa, and Adamawa.”

On a zonal basis, the south-south zone recorded the highest total revenue (N1.102 trillion), followed by the south-west with N877.8 billion.

The north-west zone came in third with N546.5 billion, north-central with N378.7 billion, north-east with N351.5 billion and south-east recorded the lowest with N340.1 billion.
