Professor Aliu Babatunde Fafunwa died earlier this morning in an Abuja hospital. He was a former minister of of education and widely regarded as Nigeria's foremost authority on education.

A source told Saharareporters that Prof. Fafunwa who turned 87 on September 23, was billed to deliver a keynote lecture at the Open University in Abuja but the event was cancelled for unknown reasons after Fafunwa had arrived Abuja.


He took ill later and was taken to a hospital where he died just minutes before 7 am Nigerian time.

Fafunwa is survived by his wife, Doris fafunwa, as well as four children and numerous grand children

If na IBB criticise Fafunwa last week, some people will tell us that the evil genuis has sent evil spirit to kill Fafunwa.

For somebody conscious enough of Nigerian politics/public affairs to be active on NL politics section, not schooling in Nigeria doesn't seem genuine enough to me not to know Prof Babafunwa.
Discussing IBB without knowing the likes of Fafunwa, Kalu Idika Kalu, Olu Falae, Omo Omoruyi, Sam Oyvoibare, Alhaji Alhaji, and other top men that held sway during IBB regime is incomplete. It's like somebody talking about Obj without knowing el-Rufai, Soludo, Ribadu or discussing Yar'adua but find a name like Aoandokaa or Abba Ruma strange.
This is not about knowing every minister by name but the likes of Fafunwa and co are too popular during and after IBB regime for a follower of Naija politics not to know.

May Allah have mercy on his soul.  Had some interesting personal encounters with him some ten years ago.

He lived all of his life for our educational system. Interesting to know that he died while on his way to deliver a lecture at a University in Abuja.

May his soul find eternal peace.
