Two hormones play major role in maintaining both primary and secondary sexual characteristics of humans. These are estrogen, which determines female characteristics, and testosterone for male sexual characteristics.

Naturally every human being would have had female body contour if not for the suppression of the female hormone in man. Female hormone (estrogen) is produced in male as in female but they are degraded (broken down) to inactive substance by the liver. Because of low performance of the liver in alcoholic, the level of estrogen in blood increase leading to change in the male reproduction process. These changes include.

1 shrinking and reduction of the size of testis
2 Reduction in size of the prostrate gland
3 Increase in breast size, pubic hair loss
These invariably affect sperm production and erectile capability.

Secondly, alcohol decreases the level of male hormone called testosterone. This is the hormone that triggers the process of sperm production (spermatogenesis) for this process to be successful a particular substance called Retinal is converted to Retinal, The latter is required for sperm maturation. However, in alcoholic, there is high level of an enzyme that breakdown alcohol in the body. That enzyme is called Alcohol dehydrogenase.

This enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) In hight level inhibits the conversion of retinal to retinal, thereby halting sperm maturation process. this leads to production of immature and abnormal sperm cells. Alcohol therefore causes gross derangement in spermatogenesis. From a reproductive point of view, this is the most important damage produced by alcohol.

In study involving group of men, it was found that following acute consumption of alcohol, sperm samples showed spermatozoa with head broken off, tails curled and with distended midsection, These are too abnormal and cannot carry out reproductive process. In human sperm specimen from alcoholic men, who are able to produce an ejaculation, may be grossly abnormal, containing few total cells and many abnormal ones.

Furthermore, alcohol can cause blockage of the tube through which sperm is ejaculated. This has been demonstrated in animal. following these changes, there is likelihood of producing defective offspring. so let's us cut down on our alcohol intake.
