A Nigerian, Agboluaje Saheed Alabi, has won the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) 2019 award.

A native of Oyo State, Saheed who single-handedly worked on his own project was one of the two winners of the global competition; winning the award alongside two Americans, Hayden Clum and Jacquelyn Cetola.

The project was on how filtering tap water or a oil/water mix through beach sand demonstrates differential filtration; with emphasis on whether “beach water filter pollution from water.”

According to a statement by the International Young Chemist Network (IYCN), the judges of the entries noted that Saheed’s “experiment was really well thought out and hit on all the main points while combining great context to students.”

In a congratulatory mail sent to the young chemist, IYCN stated that “as one of our winning entries,” Saheed “will receive $250” and his experiment will be presented during the IUPAC conference slated to hold in Paris this summer.

Commenting on the IYCN’s congratulatory release on Facebook, Saheed stated that, “I dedicated the award to the glory of God and all young chemists in the globe most especially Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, Rahaman Onike, an academic with the Oyo State College of Agriculture, Igbo-Ora, who also shared the news on his Facebook timeline, disclosed that Saheed had earlier attended Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, where he studied Biology/Chemistry between 2012 and 2015. He is currently an undergraduate of Ekiti State University.

The IUPAC was formed in 1919 by chemists from industry and academia, who recognised the need for international standardisation in chemistry,

The award was, however, sponsored by CAS – a division of the American Chemical Society; and Pearson English – one of world’s learning company, with expertise in educational courseware and assessment, and a range of teaching and learning services powered by technology.
