Governors in the south west describe the call for Fulani residents' relocation to the north as unfortunate and retrogressive in a nation preaching unity - The governors say they are not happy with the elders of the north who made the call to Fulanis resident in the southern part of the country - Rotimi Akeredolu, chairman of the south west governors forum, says the organisation is working to end insecurity in the zone Governors from the south western part of Nigeria, on Friday, July 19, made their stand known concerning the call by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) for Fulanis resident in to return to their homes.

The governors described the call for the Fulanis to leave the south and return to the north as most unfortunate, divisive and retrogressive. The Nation reports that the statement conveying the decision of the governors was signed by the forum’s chairman, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state.

a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda “With no intention to engage anyone, it is incumbent on us, as elected representatives of our people in the south west region of the country, to denounce this divisive and retrogressive statement in the strongest terms possible.

“The south west governors viewed the report with palpable trepidation and outrage, the sustained attempts to fan the ember of discord, seizing every opportunity offered by the current security challenge to undermine the unity and peaceful co-existence among Nigerians,” the statement said.

According to the governors, it is appalling that the tragic death of Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, leader of Afenifere, would be used by certain persons to advance the cause of ‘parochial and prebendal politics’.

“We intend to get to the root of the sad occurrence as we await the findings of security agencies on the unfortunate incident,” the statement added.

The governors said they are aware of the antics of certain elements from all parts of the country, who want to take advantage of the challenge. They noted that Nigeria has a rich history and has encountered adversities in the course of her transition to nationhood.

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari recently called on all Nigerians to ignore the recent call by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) to Fulanis to leave the southern part of Nigeria. The president's call came in a statement on Wednesday, July 17, by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu.
