4 TYPES OF RESUME YOU SHOULD KNOW

Chronological Resume

The chronological resume is the most common type of resume. It ensures that your work history is listed first starting from the most recent. The sequential arrangement makes it easy for a hiring manager to quickly scan your experience and determine if you are a good fit for the role.

This kind of resume is ideal for people with quality work experience as it enables them to showcase their professional background first before any other detail. If you are just starting out in your career, this might not be ideal for you.

Functional Resume

A functional resume highlights your skills and experience rather than your work history as you will find in a chronological resume. Employment history comes second to the skills you are bringing to the job. This type of resume is ideal if you have gaps in your resume due to different reasons such as unemployment, illness or raising a family.

It is also beneficial for people who are looking to make a career switch or people without any work experience as it gives them a chance to emphasize transferable skills you have used in volunteer work, paid work, or coursework.

Combination Resume

The mix resume is a blend of both the chronological and functional resume. It features the skills you acquired all through your work history rather than the particular positions you have held. It is ideal if you are making a career change and the names of previous employers may not be apparent to the potential employer.

This kind of resume encourages you to accentuate the skills you have that are applicable to the job you are applying for and also list your orderly work history. In most cases, employers want to see your sequential work history, regardless of whether that history is not very extensive.

Targeted Resume

Targeted resumes are job-specific. It is tailored to explicitly feature the experience and skills you have that are applicable to the activity you are applying for.

For example, if you are applying for a marketing job in a consulting firm, you could emphasize your Marketing Degree, Professional Certifications or talk about a time you sold course materials to your course mates in school. You could also talk about a time where you organized an event that relied on subscription for attendance and how you were able to get people to pay the subscription fee.

Before you write a targeted resume, read the job description properly to ensure that you understand the requirements in terms of educational qualification, years of experience, skills and previous training required to succeed on the job. This will help you to tailor your resume to the job and stand a better chance of getting called for an interview.

It is advisable to always apply for every job with a targeted resume.
