IF the assurance by Mr. Sylvester Nwobu-Alor, a Special Adviser to the Anambra State Governor, is anything to go by, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), South-East chapter, may soon call off their three months industrial action.

Nwobu-Alor spoke yesterday in the Government House, Awka, the state capital while receiving an award on crisis management from the youth wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN).

Nwobu-Alor was reacting to the group’s request that state-owned universities in the South-East be re-opened in the interests of students, disclosing that the strike by the lecturers would be called off any moment from now.

He said: “I won’t tell you the details, but I am assuring you that every arrangement has been put in place to meet up with the lecturers’ demands.

“We can’t be preaching moral uprightness and take actions that will encourage kidnapping, prostitution and such vices prevalent among the youths by closing down our universities.”

Nwobu-Alor, a Second Republic legislator in the old Anambra State House of Assembly, extolled the virtues of YOWICAN leaders, saying that at a time like this the country needs vibrant youths who are committed to sound morals, equity, justice and good conscience.
